Legere grew up in Massachusetts and went to St. Bernard’s Central Catholic School in Fitchburg. At first, he wanted to be a gym teacher, but then he decided he wanted to make more money and decided to study business.

In September 2012, Legere was named CEO of T-Mobile US. Since then, T-Mobile has become known for its “Un-carrier” approach to contract-free wireless networks.

At New England Telephone, he did his first job in the field of communications. Then, Legere worked for almost twenty years at AT&T, where he worked for a while with Daniel Hesse, who had been CEO of Sprint Corporation.

From April 1994 to November 1997, he was the CEO of AT&T Asia. Before that, he was the head of AT&T’s Global Strategy and Business Development. From 1997 to 1998, he was President of AT&T Solutions, a division of AT&T that did business all over the world.

Then, from 1998 to February 2000, Legere worked for Dell as senior vice president, president and chief operations officer for Dell’s operations in Europe, the Middle East, and Africa, and president, Asia-Pacific. Before he joined T-Mobile US, he was the CEO of Asia Global Crossing from February 2000 to January 2002.

From October 2001 to October 2011, he was the CEO of Global Crossing, where he led the company through bankruptcy and its eventual purchase by Level 3 Communications. His management of Global Crossing was controversial, and the company went bankrupt while he was in charge.

Since October 2012, he has been a director of the CTIA wireless internet caucus and a member of the CTIA board of directors. From October 2001 to December 2003, he was on the board of Global Crossing. From April 2000 to March 2002, he was on the boards of Sanrise Group and Asia Global Crossing. Legere said on his Twitter account in November 2019 that he would step down as CEO of T-Mobile US on April 30, 2020, when his current contract was up.

It was said that Mike Sievert, who was chief operating officer at the time, would take over for Legere. The original plan was for the change to take place on May 1, 2020. Due to the early completion of the merger with Sprint, Legere officially quit as CEO on April 1, 2020.

Legere ran on a national level in college and after college, and he still runs in races with his coworkers. As part of the Dana–Farber Cancer Institute Marathon Challenge team, he ran the Boston Marathon in 2004. In May 2016, to support competitive running, he bought a spot for a T-Mobile ad on Nick Symmonds’ shoulder.

He has been on the corporate advisory board of the School of Business and Management at Hong Kong University of Science and Technology and the government relations committee of the American Chamber of Commerce, Hong Kong.
