Saturday was the start of the indoor track and field season at Boston University. The Terriers hosted the Sharon Colyear-Danville Season Opener at the Track & Tennis Center. This was the first event of the season.
In the history of the program, four Terriers have broken into the top 10 in the 60m dash. On the women’s side, freshman Jada Smith led the way with a time of 7.61, which put her in the first place and was the third-fastest time in program history. Senior Noelani Phillips finished in second place (7.82), which was the ninth-best time for Boston University in the event.
In the men’s 60m dash, two freshmen finished first and second. Michael Onilogbo ran in 6.82 seconds, which is the sixth-best time in program history. Logan Popelka ran in 6.84 seconds, which is the eighth-best time. Leon Christian, a sophomore, ran a 6.90, which was the 11th-best time for the Terriers and good enough for fourth place in the race.

Christian did run a 21.53 in the 200m dash, which is the ninth-best time in Terrier history. He won first place in the event because of how well he did. In the high jump, Asia Hamilton, a sophomore, cleared 1.70m (5’7″) and Kasim Cisse, a graduate student, cleared 2.05m (6’8.75″). Both women and men set the 10th-best height in the history of the program.
Phillips was expected to make a statement in the 300m race for women, and she did just that. With a time of 37.44, she not only won first place but also set a new TTC facility record. Gabrielle Thomas, a former runner at Harvard, held the previous record of 37.47 seconds.

Phillips’ time of 37.44 beat the school record for BU, which was held by Sharon Colyear-Danville, whose name the meet shares. By 0.11 seconds, Phillips beat the old record.
Popelka won the men’s 300m race with a time of 33.48. He was the clear winner. His time beat the old school record of 33.71, putting him at the top of the BU record book in his first year of college. In the women’s weight throw, freshmen once again stole the show. Uchenna Uba’s first throw was 15.30m (50’2″), which put her in
second place in the event. Her throw was the eighth-best in the history of the team. In the 4x400m relay, BU had two places in the top three. The women’s relay team came in third with a time of 3:58.11, while the men’s team won first place (3:18:06).

She beat the best time she had ever run indoors, which she had set last year, and ran the fourth-best time in program history. The Terriers will play again on January 14, 2023, when they go to the Suffolk Invite on the other side of town.
