Brendan Fraser recently discussed the extreme measures he took to look his best for his role in “George of the Jungle.” The 54-year-old actor spoke up to Adam Sandler about the impact of starving himself during the filming of the 1997 picture as part of Variety’s “Actors On Actors” series.
Fraser admitted that the extreme measures he had to take to reach his ideal weight had a detrimental effect on his mental health, despite his success in reaching his physical goal. “I was waxed. Starved of carbohydrates,” Fraser recalled. “I would drive home after work and stop to get something to eat.”
“I needed some cash one day, and I went to the ATM, and I couldn’t remember my PIN number because my brain was misfiring. Banging on the thing. I didn’t eat that night” he “there was no wardrobe” for his character, Fraser stated he had to get in shape to look the part.

“You weren’t supposed to do that to us,” Sandler quipped. “You did right by the character. But you did wrong by us, man. You made us feel bad about ourselves.” Fraser played George, a man reared by apes in the African wild, in the successful picture, which received a sequel in 2003. Later, while an American heiress (played by Leslie Mann) is touring Uganda, he falls in love with her.
The film was a huge success at the box office, grossing $180 million worldwide on a budget of just $55 million. After causing a massive traffic jam in San Francisco while filming a scene for the film, Fraser recently issued an apology. According to Fraser, the 8.4-mile-long Oakland Bay Bridge was the scene’s epicenter as his character, played by a dummy, climbed to the top of the bridge to save a parachutist.
However, concerned onlookers were misled into thinking that there was actually a person trapped up there, which led to a massive backup of traffic. “Disney put a mannequin hanging by a parachute from the uprights. It brought traffic to a standstill on either side of the bridge,” the 53-year-old told SFGate. “My trailer was on the other side in a parking lot. I just remember watching the… Bridge.”
