Episodes 1 and 2 of Season 1 of Three Pines: Murder mystery, for such a hit-or-miss genre, demonstrate its time-tested infallibility by maintaining its undeniable appeal each time a new one is released. What’s within is up for debate, but it unquestionably compels you to look inside.
With the release of the first two episodes of the new whodunit from Amazon Originals Three Pines, two of the genre’s most magnetic components have come together to not only make you turn around and take a look but to have you hang around for more.
On the one hand, we have two arresting crimes, one of which is as hazy and unsettling as they come and another whose multilayered investigation baffles. However, the show also introduces an exciting detective who is both endearing enough with his winning pep talks and startlingly astute with his impulses. While it’s too early to tell whether Three Pines will be able to live up to the high bar that White Out Parts 1 & 2 set, I would have high hopes for this one.
The first two episodes introduce the gritty tension surrounding Canada’s snow-covered landscapes. However, they only scratch the surface of the constantly upsetting struggles of the indigenous communities and the upsetting neglect they experience from law enforcement.
A missing girl, yelling protesters, a murder in the neighboring town of Three Pines that seemed unrelated—all of these are connected by the renowned detective Armand Gamache. Alfred Molina wears detective Gamache’s very existence as a suit from the moment he first appears on screen, making it seem like he has never been anyone else.

Recap: Episodes 1 and 2 of Season 1 of Three Pines
The program begins with an angry Native American protest about the police’s lack of response to crimes against members of their community. Missy Two Rivers (Crystle Lightning), the mother of Blue Two Rivers (Anna Lambe), an indigenous woman who has been missing for more than 13 months, is in charge of the rapidly rising protest.
Missy is pushed into the back of a car while she sobs in protest over the police department’s lack of action. Detective Armand Gamache is the only person who appears to have compassion, so he rescues her (Alfred Molina). Gamache picks up Blue’s family from the airport and, despite his better judgment, goes against it, giving them faith that he will find her.

Armand asks for Blue at home, where his loved ones are engulfed in Christmas cheer, and his coworker Pierre tells him the news that both consoles and depresses him. According to reports, Blue was spotted driving away in Kevin Kis’ truck with her lover Tommy. Gamache begs Pierre to check the license plates and discover the truck’s current location.
His worries over Blue Two Rivers consume Gamache’s Christmas, but Crie (Roberta Battaglia) experiences the same emptiness when her mother, CC (Simone-Elise Girard), chooses to argue with her father, Richard (Robert Moloney) instead of listening to her sing. She arrived late due to her relationship with photographer Saul Petrov (Iannicko N’Doua-Legare). It’s nothing new, as seen by Crie’s lack of response to her mother’s ferociously hostile words.

The following morning, a bizarre death occurs in Three Pines. While the spectators are preoccupied watching a curling match, CC de Poitiers is electrocuted in a chair. Gamache, Jean-Guy, and Isabelle Lacoste, two of his subordinates, get involved because of the odd circumstances surrounding the killing. Local cop Nichol has decided to accompany them around the unwelcoming town that smells of regret and relief.
Gamache quickly learns that CC also mistreated people other than her close family. The renowned author of Be Calm was not very popular in the otherwise pleasant town. They may have hated her, but did they kill her? It’s not just the disgusting reality that CC had moved into the area that had once been a racist abuse school.
She has also never shown the slightest amount of charity to anyone in this community. Gamache discovers that her spouse is somewhat of an electrical nerd and that, despite his denials, he isn’t very convincing regarding his story. At that moment, Richard and the entire community are considered suspects.
Gamache learns that Blue Two Rivers was last seen in Brooklyn during that investigation and discovers a recent photo of her with Tommy and a large group of individuals.
However, her family doesn’t believe that Blue might have escaped. Missy is unyielding in her claim that Blue would never abandon her young daughter Pearl. The distraught mother thinks Blue has passed away and that no one is looking for her hard enough.

We can see in a flashback how CC killed her violent mother. Gamache removes Saul from the list of suspects once they return to Three Pines. He likes her excessively. And Richard’s situational character absolves him of responsibility.
As he solves the Be Calm word puzzle, he pays Bea a visit at the nearby art studio, which was undoubtedly the source of CC’s book’s misappropriated inspiration. Gamache receives yet another puzzle from Nichol in the meanwhile. Since CC had misled everyone as to who she was, Emilie is her biological mother (Jill Frappier).
Gamache confronts Emilie about the same and receives most of the responses he seeks. Emilie clarifies that she is CC’s aunt rather than her mother. When CC’s birth mother experienced a mental breakdown, she attacked her daughter and destroyed everything. Emilie wanted to get involved in CC and Crie’s lives when they moved back to the area.
However, CC had other ideas. She warned Emilie that she would take Crie away if she ever revealed their relationship to anyone. Due to this information, Emilie is undoubtedly the main suspect, but Gamache chooses to absolve her for the time being.
Episodes 1 & 2 of Three Pines (Season 1): Ending Discussed
Who Killed Cc De Poitiers?
Gamache may not have been surprised to learn that Emilie was missing, but the confessional recording she left behind is an odd shock. Before she left, Emilie had admitted to killing CC; lest it is disregarded, she had recounted the crime in great detail, including information that only the killer would know.
Gamache goes to Bea first to find out where Emilie might have gone because he knows how close they are. Bea is somewhat hesitant to tell on Emilie but eventually succumbs to Gamache’s urgent questions because she genuinely thinks he means well. He finds out from Bea that she would only go to the location of the vehicle accident where her husband and daughter perished.
Gamache drives there despite the snowfall and sees Emilie almost completely buried. She leaves, promising to return with assistance. He is satisfied with Emilie’s admission because no one else could have known that niacin was added to CC’s coffee to persuade her to remove the gloves. Gamache forgets to examine all the boxes before concluding that Emilie has killed her niece because of his impulsiveness and good distraction.
When Nichol puts up CC’s boots and Gamache notices that the metal spikes are located at the bottom, the realization occurs quickly—possibly too quickly. The murderer’s strategy depends on knowing that she will be wearing shoes with metal spikes, something Emilie could not maybe know. Someone who has shared much closer quarters with CC is required. Assuming it isn’t Saul or Richard, only one person could carry enough enmity to take her life.
What Happened in Episode 2 and What Can We Expect in the future?
Missy is not at ease when Missy learns that drugs may have been a factor in Blue’s disappearance. She is continually torn between believing her daughter is dead and the more plausible theory that she may have abandoned her family. Back in his hometown, Gamache gets out of his automobile and immediately realizes the horror he is about to see. Before Gamache can find Missy, who has climbed onto the department’s building’s roof, she jumps to death.
She had revealed to Isabella that she was troubled by her failure as a mother, which is probably what was bothering her. Missy’s mother persevered despite several hardships and continued to give her protection and love.
Missy believed that she had failed to protect her daughter when Blue vanished. It’s also likely that Missy intended her passing as a wake-up call, forcing the agency to start serious efforts to locate her daughter.

The convenience of discovering CC’s murderer in such a short amount of time, and that too with a satisfying resolution, feels a little too simple for the story. In addition to purchasing a home with a history of racist atrocities, CC came dangerously close to stealing the name and concept of an art studio that addresses issues affecting the indigenous population.
It is entirely conceivable that her wrongdoings extended beyond her objectionable actions. A town cannot simply unite in celebration as though their Frankensteinian monster has been slain over her coldness. Could CC de Poitiers’ gloom have deeper roots?
