The second half of the 2022 World Cup in Qatar saw a brawl break out between the Netherlands and Argentina, and it was all because of Leandro Paredes. Surprisingly, only one yellow card was issued during a play in which the whole Dutch bench appeared to rush the field.
Leandro Paredes, an Argentine player, committed two questionable tackles, the second of which was ruled as a foul, and then he slammed the ball into the Dutch sideline. Whether or not the Argentinian player realized where he kicked the ball at the time, the Dutch team certainly did.
Who among us has not mistaken the bench along the sideline for the goal after a crunching tackle? 😳

Seeing what happened next was shocking. The Netherlands bench didn’t just sit back and let the official handle this; they took matters into their own hands. The Oranje made an immediate impact on the field, led by Virgil Van Dijk.

Leandro Paredes Initiates a Battle During the World Cup
After making two questionable tackles in quick succession, Leandro Paredes then lined the ball into the Oranje bench area in an apparent fit of pique. The Dutch players were not going to sit back and let the officials handle things after that sequence of events.
Not only were no Dutch players ejected for charging onto the field, but neither was Paredes shown a red card for his gaffe. Virgil Van Dijk rushed in first and punished Paredes for an error of judgment by the Argentinean player.
Leandro Paredes very lucky to escape with just a yellow. Reckless challenge on Nathan Ake before booting the ball at the Netherlands bench.🌶 pic.twitter.com/JLVcFYcyJX

Should be a red for Paredes, no doubt. First for the tackle, second for the strike against the bench.

Even more, were waiting to be discovered. Paredes’s antics detracted from an otherwise excellent contest. The first two goals scored by Argentina were both assisted by Lionel Messi. After conceding, the Netherlands responded with a goal of their own, and they found renewed urgency after Paredes’s own goal.
