Syd and Shea McGee’s next major undertaking will be the arrival of their third child. We’re excited to share the news that baby number three is on the way! Shea, 35, exclusively tells PEOPLE. This week’s cover story features an interview with the cast of Dream Home Makeover, a Netflix renovation show.
“How ecstatic we are! All the emotions are flooding in, “The new addition to their family is expected around the middle of July, Shea says. The baby is Shea and Syd’s “grand finale baby,” in their words. Both of their daughters, Wren, 7, and Ivy, 5, are already close in age.
‘There’s a five-year gap between our oldest two and this one,’ the interior designer and co-founder of Studio McGee with her husband of 12 years explain. “Last time I had a baby, I had another baby to take care of too. It was completely insane.”
As a result, she’s crossing her fingers for an influx of extra assistance this time around. “Our girls, I think, are finally ready to step up and be helpful members of the family. Extreme enthusiasm characterizes their mood.” Syd, who is 36 years old, continues, “Our youngest kisses Shea’s belly every morning and says, ‘Hi baby.

The happy couple learned of their good fortune in an unusual manner. “I remember telling Syd, “I just have this feeling” as we were driving home from a trip where I hadn’t felt well at all. For some reason, I have this strong suspicion that I am pregnant.”
You said, ‘My body’s doing all the weird things it does when I’m pregnant,’ and I was like, ‘What? ‘” is something that Syd vividly recalls. They were eager to verify their suspicion. Forcing him to stop at a gas station on the way home from the airport to pick up a pregnancy test was how I learned the news.
Mom and Dad found out they were expecting a week before Thanksgiving, but they didn’t tell the girls until Christmas. “We waited to tell them on Christmas,” Shea explains. “We gave them a gift basket with a book and some baby toys in it, and when they opened it, they were confused. We’re expecting a baby, and I’ve already told everyone.
They were speechless; their mouths simply dropped open.” As soon as her daughters were old enough to understand the situation, she says, “Screaming erupted from them. The morning of Christmas was a lot of laughs.”
Their first two children were born while the college sweethearts turned business partners were establishing Studio McGee, so the arrival of their third child will be very different from the experiences of their first two.
Shea had recently quit her job in public relations and taken a chance on starting her own design firm out of the spare bedroom of their modest California starter home when Wren joined the family. Syd quit the job he hated a few months after she was born, sending the family’s finances into a tailspin and causing them to struggle for years.
That was something I did not see coming, Shea says now. “Attempting this was a huge challenge. Having a baby, being a new mom, and being completely clueless about what I was doing all contributed to my already intense emotional state.
To be honest, I thought I would take a break for a few months. In contrast, I thought, “Well, we’ve got to pay our mortgage,” and so I dove back in headfirst.” After spending all of their savings on starting and maintaining Studio McGee, they decided to sell their house and move to Utah, where they had both attended college and knew living expenses would be lower.
Shea reflects on the challenging period, saying, “Money problems can be enough to break two people, and throw a new baby into it. “Neither Syd nor I ever seriously considered that we wouldn’t make it. However, we were not content.”
The arrival of Ivy in 2015 marked one year after the move, made while they were still working hard to establish the foundation for what is now a globally renowned brand. Finally, they had located their first office, a shabby place without heating that would have to do.

Syd reflects, “We worked 16 or 17 hour days.” Nothing was rejected by us, and that’s saying something. The couple’s business is thriving, they have a massive online following, they worked with Target, and their Netflix show is popular.
The first season debuted in October, and the second premiered just this month. They haven’t said whether or not a third season is in the works, but they’re ready to work even if they are pregnant. To film Season 3 while Shea is expecting, “hypothetically yes, we would have to.” Syd jokes, “I’m okay with it.”
“In other words, you’re perfectly fine. And you have no concerns about how this will affect you? “A retort from his wife. He then says, smiling, “I think I’ll look good on camera either way.”
