Bennett has been playfully referring to himself as “the gay king of Christmas” in recent interviews in advance of the film’s premiere, and he has also raised issues of queer representation in media. Bennett told Page Six that the Hallmark Channel “has done such a tremendous job” of spreading the message that “Christmas is for everyone” and that “the Hallmark Channel is for everyone,” respectively.

Bennett also stated to Entertainment Weekly that he made an effort to assemble a team that was primarily comprised of people who identify as LGBTQ+ for the film. “What was so great is that we had a team of LGBTQ individuals working on it from all the creative aspects,” he added. “Our producers, writers, directors, and performers are all queer.”
Bennett plays Sam, a single man who babysits his niece and nephew and develops feelings for their neighbor, Jason (George Krissa). Bennett’s persona is based, at least in part, on his ambition to reimagine the gay Uncle Buck, the film’s straight bachelor protagonist from 1989.

This is the first Hallmark Channel film to focus on a gay relationship, but Bennett has previously portrayed a gay role. This isn’t his first time portraying a gay character; he did it in both 2020s The Christmas House and 2021’s The Christmas House 2: Deck the Halls.
Bennett’s life offset the stage with marriage to Jaymes Vaughan in Mexico. The couple was the first openly gay and lesbian couple to grace the cover of The Knot. Vaughan became well-known after he finished second on season 21 of CBS‘s The Amazing Race and made an appearance on ‘The Talk’ with celebrities such as Josh Duhamel and Anna Faris. They’ve been there for each other professionally and emotionally throughout the years. Since Jonathan is a dedicated canine fanatic, his unprepared boyfriend wins the award for “best boyfriend” thanks to the scruffy puppy he gave him.
