TCU QB Duggan Heart Surgery: To suggest that Max Duggan’s journey to New York City has been turbulent would be equivalent to claiming that Sonny Dykes’ first season at TCU has been “OK.” It significantly understates the reality. This year, Duggan didn’t even start as the starter. Morris Chandler, a redshirt sophomore, was the quarterback when Dykes took over. Still, Chandler didn’t even play a full game before suffering an injury that allowed Duggan to take over.
After 13 games, the Horned Frogs are now 12-1 overall and qualified for the playoffs, partly due to Duggan’s clutch performance and the TCU offense. Texas Christian has a history of coming from behind to win games this year. Most recently, in the Big 12 Championship Game against Kansas State, they forced overtime thanks to a stunning last drive that left Duggan in pain.
Although TCU ultimately lost, many who may not have been familiar with TCU this season admired Duggan’s tenacity. But Duggan is used to facing challenges. The quarterback had heart surgery two years ago to treat an issue discovered in 2020 during a preseason COVID-19 scan. The heart operation took place throughout nine hours of surgery.

After the fact, Duggan had difficulties. He continued to play for the following two seasons, though, until Dykes joined TCU. He has a chance to win the Heisman now. But because of the sheer bravery he’s already shown for TCU. He’s already won over college football fans.
Why Did Max Duggan Needed Heart Surgery?
In 2020, while Duggan was being examined for COVID-19, medical professionals discovered something quite different: Duggan was born with a disorder known as Wolff-Parkinson-White Syndrome. An additional electrical route in the heart creates a fast heartbeat in this disease. According to Duggan, the lengthy surgery to treat the syndrome has problems.
He described how it inserted catheters into his neck and crotch for Texas Monthly. “My operation lasted nine hours. After the surgery, I developed a blood clot two days later, necessitating immediate emergency surgery. It essentially puts a stop to your life. Duggan claimed that despite having to inform his parents of his condition, he was optimistic that he would be able to return to the pitch.

According to Duggan, “when you learn about the heart disease and you sit down and tell your parents about it, it makes you open your eyes a little bit and make you feel like maybe my career is finished.” I believed everything would be okay if I started learning more and asking more questions.

Despite not beginning TCU’s season opener against Iowa State in 2021, he entered the contest and went 16 of 19 for 3 touchdowns in a 34-31 defeat. But the message was clear: Duggan would not be deterred from the field. He played for most of last season with a broken foot and a torn tendon that required surgery after the season ended.
Duggan bounces back from hardship stronger. Duggan seems to be in good health ahead of a playoff matchup with Michigan. This year, he threw for 3,321 yards and scored 36 touchdowns (thirty passing and six rushings). The quarterback has traveled a long way to get to this point. Past the Heisman, TCU’s chances versus Michigan are slim. But Duggan has experience beating the odds. He will need to accomplish this twice more as his collegiate football career comes to a close to leading TCU to a national championship.
Final Words
The tale of Duggan at TCU is well-documented. In 2020, he underwent a nine-hour cardiac operation to treat a problem found during expanded offseason testing, and he then required emergency surgery to remove a blood clot.
