Season five, episode five of ‘Yellowstone’ on Paramount Network takes place after the Dutton family and the ranch staff leaves the Yellowstone Dutton Ranch to brand the cattle. John Dutton teams up with the locals, including cowboy and Stock Growers Association chairman Emmett Walsh.
When John inquires as to Emmett’s willingness to attend camp, Emmett makes it quite obvious that he, too, is eager to participate. John suffers a tragedy in the sixth episode of the season, making viewers fear for Emmett’s safety. Now, here’s all you need to know about that! WARNING: The following contains spoilers.

Who is Emmett in Yellowstone?
Unfortunately, it’s true; Emmett has passed away. The Dutton Ranch’s cowhands, Rip Wheeler, Beth Dutton, Kayce Dutton, Tate Dutton, and John Dutton all head out to the valley for the cattle drive in the fifth episode of the fifth season. Despite being of retirement age, Emmett shares John’s cowboy faith and joins the ranks of the senior cowboys.
After dusk in the sixth episode of the season, Emmett and John get into bed for the night. Emmett emphasizes the need for a cowboy, someone familiar with the importance of the Western way of life, to serve as Governor of Montana. Soon after, Emmett goes to bed and doesn’t wake up the next morning.
John tries to rouse Emmett up the following morning before realizing that he has passed away. Emmett, being a cowboy, undoubtedly envisioned his own death in the line of duty herding and tending to livestock. In the midst of a cattle drive, where he had spent his final days, Emmett passed away after a full and adventurous life.
Although John is terribly saddened by Emmett’s passing, he finds solace in the fact that his son would not have wanted it any other way. When John gets back to the ranch, he informs Emmett’s wife about his death.

‘Gunsmoke’ star Buck Taylor, well remembered for his role as Newly O’Brian, plays Emmett. He’s been with the show since day one. The death of Emmett has to have viewers wondering if they’ve seen the last of the actor in the Western drama. I say we find out.

Is Buck Taylor Leaving Yellowstone?
With Emmett’s passing, it’s clear that Buck Taylor has departed “Yellowstone,” even though neither Paramount Network nor Taylor has made an official announcement about his departure. With Emmett’s demise, there is no longer any room for the actor to reprise the role. The impact of Emmett’s death in the season’s narrative may have made Taylor’s potential departure unavoidable.
The local media attributes John’s decision to skip a presidential event in the sixth episode of the fifth season to Emmett’s death. Although John is still likely to go through with going to the party, the episode will likely have some discussion of Emmett’s death.
As a result, it’s possible that Emmett will continue to play a role in the season’s story even if Taylor doesn’t appear in any episodes. While his presence on the program will undoubtedly be missed, fans can look forward to seeing him in the upcoming films “Two Sinners and a Mule” and “Billy and the Bandit.”
