In the fifth episode of Yellowstone’s fifth season, one of John Dutton’s loved ones is killed in what the cowboys call the “perfect death.” First, though, a word of warning: there are plot twists galore ahead. Every cowboy, ranch hand, and day worker the Duttons could round up rode off into the broad expanses of Yellowstone as Season 5 Episode 5 “Watch ‘Em Ride Away” concluded.
In Episode 6, they band together to face the crowd that was inspired by that episode. Together among them is John Dutton’s (Kevin Costner) longest buddy, a seasoned cowboy and wise elder who has rubbed shoulders with many of the others in the room for decades.
Emmett Walsh, a mainstay of Yellowstone and John’s loyal ally, is pictured here. As a matter of fact, Emmett has been the main character on television’s most popular show since the pilot episode, “Daybreak,” and he has been portrayed by Western legend Buck Taylor the entire time.
While getting ready to ride off to the gathering, Emmett says, “wouldn’t miss this for the world.” This line comes from Yellowstone Season 5, Episode 5. But neither he nor the spectators could have known that this was the final trip.

‘Yellowstone’ Says Goodbye to Emmett Taylor
In the sixth episode, “Cigarettes, Whiskey, a Meadow, and You,” we see Kayce (Luke Grimes) and his son, Tate (Brecken Merrill), herding Yellowstone cattle like pros. To fulfill John’s grandson Tate’s (Brecken Merrill) one and only wish for the trip, Emmett discloses that he packed a fly fishing rod. John laughs as the two eldest members of the group bike off to cool off by the creek.
You might be able to make some money off of it, son. When his son, Kayce (Luke Grimes), points out how much they could benefit from a day like this, he tells his father, “You could bottle it up and sell it.” Included Emmett. Later, we find John and his old companion making camp beneath an even more ancient tree. John makes a joke about Emmett’s snoring, but by the time he’s finished, the 80-something cowboy is already sawing logs.

John moans, My dad always said, ‘If you can’t sleep through a man’s snoring, you’re not weary enough. More at peace than they’ve ever been, the pair go off to sleep under their tree with their heads resting on their saddles. Following, we see a beautiful montage of the next morning while John tries to wake up his old friend. Emmett, though, is still sleeping.

Like the Hero Every Cowboy Hopes to Become, He Met His End Out on the Trail
Emmet looks cold and unfeeling even at a distance. The kind cowboy, John realizes immediately, has passed away peacefully in his sleep. In other words, “He didn’t come to. “He just died out here on the trail, like every cowboy dreams of,” John tells Rip (Cole Hauser) with a sob in his throat. Nonetheless, a cowboy’s job is never over.
Before Emmett’s wife returns home and sees his horse return without a rider, John and Clara must race back to the ranch to break the news. They do, thank goodness, but Emmett’s wife is distraught and John feels her pain.
As she sobs on his shoulder, the local news crew turns its attention away from the celebrations to cover the touching scene of Montana’s governor comforting a grieving local woman following the death of her husband, the state’s Fish & Game director. “How?” Mrs. Walsh finally manages to inquire about Emmett’s passing.

Just like a real cowboy. John holds her close as he sobs, leaning her head against his saddle and gazing at the stars. His eyes were shut. He never even bothered to crack them open.
Senator Lynelle Perry (played by Wendy Moniz) also shows up. However, she does not believe that Mrs. Walsh has accepted Emmett’s passing. On this point, John and I part ways. She claimed that the mere possibility of his death casting a shadow on this branding would be a source of immense shame for him. She’s every bit as much of a cowgirl as he was,” he says.
He Could Fall in a Pile of Cow Dung and Come Out Smelling Like a Rose
A news story about the Yellowstone Dutton Ranch MEPP is the culmination of the whole thing. One that Wes Bentley’s Jamie and Dawn Olivieri’s Sarah Atwood manage to catch at his apartment. They will witness John consoling Mrs. Walsh following Emmett’s passing. The Governor was “exactly where he’s meant to be,” according to the newscasters, as he reassured the citizens. And from here on out, support for John among the general people will be unwavering.
When asked about this, Jamie scowls, “I swear that dude could fall in a pile of cow shit and come out smelling like a rose.” “I confess, he’s hard to beat in a fair fight,” he adds of his adoptive dad. Sarah, however, has other ideas. Yellowstone Season 7 Episode 7 will air on Sunday, December 18th at 9 pm ET/PT on Paramount Network.
