The Travis County Sheriff’s office told the public that basketball coach Chris Beard was taken into custody early on Monday, December 12, 2022.
According to the report, Beard was arrested at 10:18 a.m. for “assault on a family or household member,” which is a third-degree felony. He was then taken to the Travis County Jail. His lawyer has said the accusation is “inconceivable.”

Who is Chris Beard?
Chris Beard is the head coach of the men’s basketball team at the University of Texas at Austin. He was born Christopher Michael Beard on February 18, 1973.
The 49-year-old has also worked as a coach at Little Rock, Angelo State and McMurry. The Associated Press named him National College Coach of the Year for 2019.
ESPN says they got confirmation that Beard was booked into the Travis County Jail. Kristen Dark, the Travis County Sheriff’s Office’s senior public information officer, told the newspaper, “He is in our custody. I can confirm [Chris Beard] is the person who is in our booking process.”

The Austin Police Department told ESPN that they got a “disturbance hotshot” call, and officers went to the house just after midnight on Monday. The Austin Police Department website states ‘hotshot calls’ are: “Incidents which are in progress and are an immediate threat to life and/or public safety.”
Beard’s Attorney: Client Should ‘Never Have Been Arrested’
Jeff Goodman, a basketball expert for Stadium who has also worked for ESPN, CBSSports, and FOXSports, quoted a tweet from the University of Texas at Austin saying, “The university is aware of the situation with Chris Beard. We are continuing to gather information and monitoring the legal situation.”
Beard’s lawyer, Perry Minton, told the American-Statesman at 10:30 a.m. on Monday, “Coach Beard is 100% innocent of these charges. He should never have been arrested. The complainant wants him released immediately and all charges dismissed. It is truly inconceivable.”

Randi Trew is Chris’s current girlfriend. She used to play volleyball for Texas Tech and now coaches the sport. Randi’s Instagram bio, which is now private, says that she owns Trewly Organized, a company that helps people get their homes and small businesses in order.
Beard told NBC Sport about his relationship with Randi: “My girlfriend right now is a high school volleyball coach, and I tell her that her season is the same as mine.”
“It’s all relative. When she has a big game it’s just like if we’re playing Texas or Baylor. When you’re a competitor and you’re in a competition, the level doesn’t matter.”
