Shantaram Season 2: Renewed or Canceled the Show?

We discuss whether Shantaram on Apple TV+ will have a second season and whether it will be renewed or canceled.

Based on Gregory David Roberts’ 2003 novel of the same name, Shantaram is an Apple TV+ original. The heroin addict and bank robber in this drama, as in the novel, escapes from an Australian prison in the 1980s and seeks refuge in Bombay.

In this version, Charlie Hunnam (Sons of Anarchy) portrays the fugitive and the series’ protagonist. The twelve-part series was created by Eric Warren Singer (Top Gun: Maverick) and Steve Lightfoot (Hannibal).

When the sought guy, who goes by the name Lin Ford, lands in Bombay, he becomes friends with a vivacious tour guide named Prabhu (Shubham Saraf). This tour guide finds Lin food and shelter in this dangerous city, and they quickly become friends and establish a commercial connection.

Lin makes friends with many other criminals while running from the law and develops a passionate love for them. Although Lin’s quest for forgiveness occupies most of the show, there are other subplots. Two competing criminal bosses are in a land battle, while another plot involves two Italian pimps and their prostitute Lisa (Elektra Kilbey).

Despite receiving mixed reviews, the series has a 56% rating on Rotten Tomatoes. Even though more people liked it, the movie scored 7.56 on IMDb. I thought the show was quite boring because it had a long runtime and way too many episodes for the basic plot it was trying to portray.

Lin is portrayed as a tortured hero, quickly becoming tedious and clichéd. The program also has numerous poorly written characters who are incredibly unlikeable and stereotypical of flaws and aimlessness. A ray of hope might be found in Prabhu, the show’s humorous sidekick, who shines in this otherwise depressing drama.

Will there be Shantaram Season 2?

Apple TV+ hasn’t confirmed or canceled Shantaram Season 2 yet. With a follow-up novel by the same author, it’s not unreasonable to believe Season 2 will be picked up, especially with Charlie Hunnam as the lead.

Even the actors and crew (including Hunnam) want a second season. Hunnam told The Hollywood Reporter during Shantaram Season 1‘s world premiere:

“We did the best job we could possibly do with the first season, against at times what seemed to be insurmountable odds. We did some things really, really well and captured some magic.”

“There are some things that we can do better if we had the opportunity to go back season two and the hope is we get to continue telling the story the way it wants to be told, whether that’s in 10, 20 or 30 more hours. One thing is clear: This text has an energy of its own and demands to be told the way it wants to be told.”

That might be easier said than done, though. As I’ve already noted, Season 1’s reviews were, to put it mildly, mixed, and Hunnam’s current medical condition—he just hurt his back while practicing for his part in the upcoming Zack Snyder film Rebel Moon—could delay any prospective production for at least two years. He said the following in the same THR interview:

“I have a totally exploded S1 and S2 that are torn wide open, a hundred percent dehydrated. It’s going to take two years to heal, and I have a 40 percent tear on the ligament on the right side that holds my spinal column in place.”

Do you deem that to be wrong? How did he feel while Shantaram was being filmed? Hunnam seemed to have had a terrible time finishing the first season of the action series:

“When I was in India, I got a bacterial gut infection, a viral gut infection, an acute respiratory infection. I had conjunctivitis in both eyes, an ear infection, and dengue fever from a mosquito bite.”

In addition, the lead actor seems to have lost part of his enthusiasm for the show due to the entire ordeal. It turns out that the duration of Season 1’s production may have reached seven years:

“I actually feel numb tonight, maybe somewhat unemotional. I am excited for the world to see it, but after seven years, I suppose I’m saying that it’s more personal to me than sharing it with the outside world, and I suppose it all hasn’t really sunk in yet.”

Shantaram Season 2 Renewal or Cancellation?

Apple has not yet confirmed where there will be a season 2 of Shantaram.

Apple typically avoids the ugly word of the moment—cancellation—by either renewing a series or classifying it as a miniseries if they don’t see the need to produce additional episodes. Due to their cunning strategy, they have avoided mainly criticism in recent years, unlike Netflix and Prime Video, who have suffered from fans who hoped their priceless episodes had been carried for a bit longer.

Currently, Shantaram is in an awkward position, receiving mixed reviews from reviewers and lukewarm reception from viewers overall. Apple might classify this as a one-off, limited series and call it a day, but weirder things have happened.

There was a sequel novel, and the series is a mostly faithful adaptation of the original work. Therefore, more of this story can be told if the audience is interested. I’d be very shocked if Shantaram received a second-season renewal, but the companion book, The Mountain Shadow, might persuade the streaming service to change its mind. As always, we’ll let you know if there are any developments on the upcoming renewal of Shantaram.

December 16, 2022, update – Shantaram won’t be renewed for season 2, according to Apple. The television show was canceled. Follow us on for more latest updates.
