On Saturday, the London Knights and the Ontario Hockey League made the tragic announcement that center Abakar Kazbekov had passed away. He was 18. The joint statement did not provide any more information.
Multiple news outlets have reported that Kazbekov fell from a downtown apartment building early on Saturday, leading to his death. The London police are looking into the situation, but no foul play is suspected at this time. The Russian player, Kazbekov, contributed to Friday’s 5-2 home win against the Owen Sound Attack.

The Knights had the Moscow native on their roster since the start of the previous season. Earlier in his career, he competed in the Russian under-16 and under-18 leagues. Kazbekov played in 12 games for London and recorded one assist. While playing last year, he managed only one goal in nine contests.
The Knights and the OHL announced that Saturday night’s London game against the Flint Firebirds has been rescheduled. Out of respect for those engaged in the Erie Otters vs. Saginaw Spirit and Kingston Frontenacs vs. Peterborough Petes games who were close to Kazbekov, the league has decided to postpone both of those contests as well.

Saginaw Spirit Postpone Game After London Player’s Death
After the death of a London Knights player early Saturday in London, Ontario, the Saginaw Spirit postponed their game against the Erie Otters. London’s 18-year-old center Abakar Kazbekov was discovered dead on the pavement outside his apartment at 8:20 a.m. on Saturday, according to CTV News in London. He had participated in Friday night’s victory against Owen Sound.

During the 2021 under-18 selection for the Ontario Hockey League, London selected Russian center 6’1″ Kazbekov. He played in 12 games and contributed once. Because of “sensitivity to the various persons engaged in the planned game who were close to” Kazbekov, the OHL also decided to postpone London’s game against Flint and Peterborough’s game against Kingston.
A future day and time will be set for the game. The Saginaw Spirit will honor all tickets for Saturday’s game, whether they are utilized for the rescheduled date or another home game.
