Fans of football are angry that FIFA let Iker Casillas carry the World Cup trophy on Sunday afternoon. Casillas and Deepika Padukone, a big name in Bollywood, brought the World Cup trophy to the final in a Louis Vitton briefcase.
But at the beginning of October, the Spanish legend said, “I hope you respect me. I’m gay,” in a Twitter post that has since been deleted.
The tweet was up for about an hour, and Carlos Puyol replied, “Iker, it’s time to tell our story.” Then, Casillas said that his account had been hacked, and he apologized to the LGTBQ community for what was said in the tweet.

“FIFA inviting Iker Casillas for the trophy reveal after that horrible gay joke, in a country that criminalises homosexuality,” one fan fumed.
“FIFA’s thinking: Let’s get the former player that pretended to be gay as a joke to deliver the World Cup Trophy to the final,” a second added. And a third tweeted, “Of course they’d have Iker Casillas bring out the trophy, since he recently made fun of coming out as a gay football player!”

After the tweet was taken down, Casillas said, “Hacked account. Luckily everything in order. Apologies to all my followers. And of course, more apologies to the LGBT community.”
