Due to the restructuring of DC Studios, the newly rumored Man of Steel 2 is now in doubt, casting Henry Cavill’s Superman in an uncertain future. The reorganization of the DC Universe has made the status of the rumored Man of Steel 2 questionable. After donning the Superman cape for the first time in 2013’s Man of Steel, Henry Cavill has since made numerous cameos in the DC Extended Universe, including Batman v Superman: Dawn of Justice and Justice League.
He made his most recent cameo in the DC Universe in a post-credits sequence from Black Adam. He then declared in an Instagram post that he would reprise the part. James Gunn and Peter Safran were appointed as the co-CEOs of DC Studios in November 2022 to revive the series after its polarising reception up until that time.
Several planned projects have been shelved due to Gunn and Safran’s planning for the DCU’s next ten years. One such undertaking might be a potential Man of Steel sequel, which, according to Variety, might not go the same way as Gunn’s vision for the franchise.
Henry Cavill would have played Superman in the sequel for the first time since 2017’s Justice League (excluding Zack Snyder’s Justice League, which will be released in 2021). There were speculations in October that Warner Bros. was aggressively seeking writers for a new Superman movie in development. Still, there are now questions about whether this project will fit into Gunn’s continuity.
Does Superman Still Fit Into the DC Universe?
Superman’s appearance in Black Adam suggests that the DC Universe still has plans for him, and Dwayne Johnson himself wants to see his character team up with the Kryptonian.
However, there are now doubts if this will occur in the future, considering the movie’s disappointing box office performance. Gunn was hired to give the series new life and elevate it to the MCU’s level of popularity. In light of this, he might reject Johnson’s persona and possibly any future ambitions for Superman.
Henry Cavill is, without a doubt, one of Hollywood’s most sought-after actors, and Superman is arguably the most recognizable superhero of all time. Given that Cavill has also voiced his hope and commitment to the character, Gunn is undoubtedly aware of this. It also appears that the DCU has not yet seen the last of the Man of Steel.
Less specific is what role he will play. Gunn has the enormous task of undoing the negative response of the Snyder era, but the upcoming The Flash might be his ticket out of trouble. Gunn may be moving forward with ideas for Superman’s plot if he chooses, as Cavill has reportedly already filmed a cameo for the movie.
Long-standing rumors suggest that The Flash, which stars Ezra Miller and Ben Affleck in his comeback as Batman, may incorporate some Flashpoint plotline from the comics. Gunn’s concept might be introduced seamlessly because, in the comics, this plot line leads to a reboot of the universe.
A soft reboot of the DC Universe may be Gunn’s best option for starting over while keeping all of the Justice League stars, including Gal Gadot, Ben Affleck, and Jason Momoa, and reintroducing them in new tales consistent with his vision. Time will tell if The Flash ushers in Gunn’s period and if he decides to pursue Cavill’s Superman in the shape of Man of Steel 2 or pursue another path.
