The Life and Death of Anna Nicole Smith
Anna Nicole Smith, a model, actress, and Playboy Playmate of the Year, passed away ten years ago this February.
Vickie Lynn Hogan was Smith’s mother; she was married at age 17, had a child at age 18, and soon after that, she and her first husband split up. Before starting to strip at a club in Houston, she worked at Red Lobster, Wal-Mart, and a restaurant serving fried chicken.
There she met oil tycoon J. Howard Marshall immediately fell in love with Smith and supported her financially as her career took off. She modeled for Guess and H&M, appeared in “Naked Gun 33 & A Third,” and appeared on the cover of Playboy magazine.
In 1994, at the age of 26, Smith married J. Howard Marshall while her career was in full bloom. Age-wise, he was 89.
“I loved him so much for what he did for my son and me,” Smith told Larry King on his show in 2002. “I’ve never had a love like that before. No one has ever loved me, done things for me, respected me, and didn’t care what people said about me.”
Marshall didn’t mention Smith in his will and passed away after only 13 months of marriage. After that, Smith and his family started a protracted legal struggle over a share of Marshall’s enormous estate. Over ten years later, the case finally reached the Supreme Court.
Smith kept up her glamorous but troubled lifestyle by appearing as a guest on award programs, endorsing a weight loss supplement, and appearing in reality TV on E”The !’s Anna Nicole Show.” Because the show repeatedly featured Smith inebriated without appearing to offer her any assistance, Jon Stewart dubbed it an abomination.
Smith gave birth to a daughter in 2006. Still, the joyous occasion was quickly overshadowed by the tragic death of Daniel, Smith’s first child, following an unintentional drug overdose in the same hospital room.
“Deep in my heart, I knew after Daniel had died that my friend had gone,” said longtime friend Pol Atteu. “I never saw the willingness to want to live.”
This episode recounts her public ascent to prominence and catastrophic fall from grace, culminating in her unsolved death in 2007 at the Hard Rock Hotel & Casino. On February 17, 2017, at 9 p.m. ET on HLN, “How it Happened, The Life and Death of Anna Nicole Smith” will premiere.
