Netflix Is Reducing Season 4 Of The Umbrella Academy To Just 6 Episodes

Although The Umbrella Academy, a previous Netflix hit, has made it to its fourth season, the show’s demise is not without some cost. The Umbrella Academy season 4 will only have six episodes, as previously stated. Compared to the prior three seasons, which each included ten episodes and averaged fifty to sixty minutes in length, this is a radical change.

The show’s executive producer, Steve Blackman, acknowledged the switch on Twitter, but he still promises entertaining episodes. Personally, I believe The Umbrella Academy might need a trim following the slow pace of the previous season. It’s likely that Netflix is trying to save money, so they aren’t ordering the full 10 episodes (10 hours), but this is better than canceling the program altogether (which is conceivable in the era of streaming, as seen by the cancellation of series like GLOW). The Umbrella Academy, unlike many Netflix shows, will have a proper conclusion.

Season 3 of The Umbrella Academy was a step back from the first two seasons, which were Netflix’s dark horse sleeper performers. As if that wasn’t bad enough, Season 3 also had much lower ratings from viewers. Seasons 1 and 2 were both critically acclaimed (85% and 88% on Rotten Tomatoes), however season 3 was widely panned (55%). It’s not like there’s a concerted effort to flood review sites with negative feedback because of one particular problem (like Elliot Page‘s transition narrative, for example). People just…didn’t enjoy the season. This is something with which I wholeheartedly agree. To put it bluntly, it sucked.

Because occasionally shorter seasons have lengthier episodes to make up for the discrepancy, the duration of these six episodes is unknown at this time. Though I anticipate them to be of standard length, this season will be shorter overall than the preceding three.

That may be for the best, really. Still, all things considered, it’s a smart decision on Netflix‘s part to let The Umbrella Academy wrap off a tale it’s been developing for three years. More series should be given this opportunity, even if it means rearranging the episode sequence. At least it’s not a cliffhanger of the magnitude of so many other killed-too-soon shows on the site. Season 4 of The Umbrella Academy could probably need some cutting, but here’s hoping for the best. This following year will provide the answer.

The Umbrella Academy, a former Netflix blockbuster, has reached its fourth season, but its cancellation does not come without repercussions. As was previously announced, there will only be six episodes in season 4 of The Umbrella Academy. This is a significant deviation from the previous three seasons, which each included 10 episodes and averaged fifty to sixty minutes in duration.
