The venerable head of the music business, Clive Davis, has revealed his bis*xuality by publishing his new memoir.
Even though many of the actions for which Davis has been mainly responsible are well-known, Davis himself may not be.
Aretha Franklin, Rod Stewart, Aerosmith, Kelly Clarkson, Alicia Keys, Bruce Springsteen, Chicago, Billy Joel, Pink Floyd, Christina Aguilera, Carlos Santana, Whitney Houston, the Grateful Dead, and many others were among the artists he signed to both C.B.S. and Arista Records.
Along with L.A. Reid, Babyface, and Bad Boy Records co-founder Sean “Diddy” Combs, he founded LaFace Records.
Occasionally, people with romantic relationships with men and women are labeled bis*xual by the media even when they don’t genuinely identify as such. Davis, on the other hand, now identifies as bis*xual with pride. From his conversation with Cynthia McFadden for A.B.C. News:
And there are deeply personal revelations: The end of his two marriages, and in the final chapter, Davis discusses his s*xuality. He is bis
8xual, he told me. Since the end of his second marriage in 1985, he has been s*xually involved with men. At first with both men and women, Davis said, but for the past 20 years with two male partners: A doctor for 13 years and for the past seven, with another man he does not name.
He tells me bis*xuality is “maligned and misunderstood” but that it is his truth and he decided it was time for him to say so publicly. I asked Davis about the old adage that people are “either gay, straight or lying.”
“I’m not lying,” Davis said. ”[Bis*xuality] does exist. For over 50 years I never had s*x with a male. It wasn’t repressed. I had very good s*xual relationships with women.”
Katie, this afternoon, Davis will speak with Katie Couric about his book, his career, and his s*xual orientation.
So I just heard Clive Davis is releasing a memoir and spreading false information about me and my music… http://t.co/YPAISlsa

As a producer, Davis has received four Grammy nominations and has been inducted into the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame. He is currently one of the most influential people to come out as LGBT.
Clive Davis Discloses His S*xuality and Legendary Artists’ Secrets
Along with recording everyone from Bob Dylan and Bruce Springsteen to Dionne Warwick and Aretha Franklin, he also discovered artists as diverse as Janis Joplin, Santana, Whitney Houston, and Alicia Keys. The Grateful Dead and Aerosmith were there. Did I not mention Kelly Clarkson, Jennifer Hudson, and Barry Manilow?
Together with L.A. Reid and Babyface, he founded a business that Usher and Pink used as their base of operations. He co-founded Bad Boy Records with Sean “Puffy” Combs and recorded Notorious B.I.G. The list truly is endless.
The former attorney, who later became president of C.B.S. Records, has been a critical player in the music business for almost 50 years. Davis, currently 80 years old, is the head of Sony Music Entertainment’s creative department. Last week, he was featured on Billboard Magazine’s power issue cover.

The Sound Track of My Life, his autobiography, is now available. It details his Brooklyn beginnings, the death of his parents when he was still a teenager, and his triumphal, scholarship-funded ascent through New York University and Harvard Law School.
The more than 500-page book is chock-full of the frequently sassy backstage tales of some of the most well-known artists of our time, including how Janis Joplin suggested they have s*x to seal their deal, how John Lennon gave him advice on the creative process and how false allegations of embezzlement ended his career at C.B.S.
Additionally, there are very private admissions, including the dissolution of Davis’ two marriages and his s*xual orientation in the book’s last chapter. He told me that he is bis*xual. He has had intercourse with males since his second marriage ended in 1985. Davis claimed that he initially had relationships with men and women but has spent the last 20 years with two men: a doctor for 13 years and a different man for the last seven.
When questioned about why he won’t name the guys he has dated, he responded that it is their privacy, not his own, that he is defending.
For most of the past month, we have followed Davis to keep up. Davis is entertaining to be around, whether at his magnificent office at the top of the New York Sony Building, his gorgeous, art-filled New York duplex, or his bungalow at the Beverly Hills Hotel.
There is always something going on. Senior superstars require his ear, and upcoming young composers want to speak with him. He never gets upset. Possesses time for all. Always match the handkerchief and ties.
