Jurors Will Decide If Tory Lanez Shot Megan Thee Stallion

Rapper Tory Lanez’s trial for shooting hip hop artist Megan Thee Stallion in the foot started with jury deliberations on Thursday. After hearing the remainder of the defense’s closing argument from the previous day and a short rebuttal from Los Angeles County prosecutors, the jury of seven women and five men pondered for slightly over three hours.

They were unable to come to a decision on the three felony counts against the 30-year-old Canadian rapper, and will return on Friday to continue deliberations on those charges: discharging a firearm with gross negligence; assault with a semiautomatic firearm; and carrying a loaded, unregistered firearm in a vehicle. Lanez, who has pleaded not guilty, faces up to 22 years in jail and deportation if found guilty of the charges.

Megan Thee Stallion, whose real name is Megan Pete and who is 27 years old, said that in the summer of 2020, when the two were traveling in an SUV in the Hollywood Hills, Lanez discharged a pistol at the back of her feet and yelled for her to dance. Bullet pieces had to be surgically removed from her feet. Prosecutors underlined her bravery in testifying and the animosity she received as a result in their final remarks. According to them, she has nothing to gain by lying.

In his closing arguments, Lanez’s attorney claimed that Megan’s closest friend at the time, Kelsey Harris, fired the rounds because she was envious of Lanez and sought to halt the shooting. Legal counsel George Mgdesyan claims Megan framed Lanez in the shooting to make herself seem better. As we’ve seen before, Harris has denied being the shooter and instead pointed the finger at Lanez. In an email, her lawyer flatly denied any wrongdoing on her part.

On Thursday, the jury requested that the evidence of the single non-participant witness to the shooting be read aloud to them. This witness was a guy on a neighboring balcony who was with his children at the time of the incident but who stated he did not pay careful attention out of fear for them.

The defense summoned Sean Kelly as an expert witness, but he ended up being used by both sides. He claimed to have seen a woman’s muzzle flash, as well as a little male “firing everywhere.” Lanez, whose real name is Daystar Peterson, released his first mixtape in 2009 and quickly rose to fame, eventually leading to the release of albums on big record labels. Both of his most recent albums charted within Billboard’s top ten.
