What does it matter if Ethan Clade from Disney’s Strange World is gay? One of this character’s most endearing qualities is that he… is. The most recent feature film from Walt Disney Animation Studios is Strange World. It chronicles the Clade family’s epic journey, inspired by pulp periodicals and movies.
The Clade family is endearing from the beginning, but Ethan Clade (voiced by Jaboukie Young-White) is the movie’s actual protagonist. He is a typical adolescent who is still trying to figure out who he is and discover himself. It’s lovely to see him develop a crush on a boy. It just so happens that boy is a boy.
The best thing about this is that Ethan is gay, and that is all there is to know about him as a character in the novel. His parents are aware of and love him for who he is. His father, Searcher Clade (voiced by Jake Gyllenhaal), actually goes so far as to humiliate him in front of his crush, which his parents are pretty adept at.
Everyone needs to be able to see themselves on TV. Thus allowing LGBTQ+ people to do so is crucial. Producer Roy Conli replies that this started from the very beginning of Ethan’s conception when asked about Ethan.
“At the beginning, it was essential to establish an inclusive and diverse world that reflected our team, the wider world, and the people we see daily. And I believe that Ethan’s compassion and his part in the movie are what matter most.
Conli continues by outlining Ethan’s contributions to Strange World. “There is Jaeger, the conqueror; Searcher, the controller; and Ethan, the conservationist. He possesses the love of nature that we all need. And I’m hoping that he will win over people’s hearts everywhere.
Don Hall, the film’s director, believes that it is crucial to integrate Ethan into the narrative without drawing attention to the fact that he is gay. “We also adore Ethan. He is simply a lovely and unique character. And Jaboukie did a fantastic job voicing that character. We’re just delighted to have released this film. I do not doubt that Ethan will receive a lot of attention.
On November 23, Disney’s Strange World will be released in theaters, so assemble the whole family and head to the nearest large screen.
