House of the Dragon’s penultimate episode, with Rhaenys emerging from the flagstones atop her dragon, was incredible. Sensational. No one could have predicted that it would be brutally slashed–er, topped–by the finale’s own epic dragon moment.
As is customary in the fictional world of “Game of Thrones,” not everyone survives, and the subsequent fallout will have far-reaching consequences. You can’t wait for season two of House of the Dragon, so here is everything we know about it.
House of the Dragon Season 2 Potential Release Date
Thanks to the old gods and the new, House of the Dragons will be back for a second season. This was established a very long time ago. Just five days after the premiere of the pilot, the news broke.
Considering the insatiable want for the Game of Thrones spin-off among viewers, it’s not surprising that HBO was interested. Between its Sunday premiere and its Friday follow-up, House of the Dragon drew nearly 20 million viewers, the most for any new original series in HBO‘s history.
HBO’s vp of programming and development, Francesca Orsi, gushed over the show’s success, saying: “Everyone in the House of the Dragon season one team is quite pleased with how things turned out.
“Our incredible cast and staff took on an enormous task and smashed all our expectations, delivering a show that has quickly become a television institution. Many thanks [to co-creator George RR Martin, co-creator Ryan Condal, showrunners Miguel Sapochnik, and executive producer David Benioff].
With season two, we are even more thrilled to continue the great saga of House Targaryen. So, let’s talk about a time frame now. When do we get to take the dragons on their next field trip? Unfortunately, we don’t have an answer to that question just yet, but we suspect it will be quite some time.
Season one took about a year to make because of the massive scope and level of detail it featured. Without the interruption of the civil war, filming lasted for a full 10 months. According to an interview with Vulture, HBO’s executive Casey Bloys revealed that the show will not premiere until 2024.
After saying, “Don’t expect it in ’23, but I guess sometime in ’24,” he eventually declined to provide further details. We’re just getting started on the plan, and like last time, there are a lot of unknowns.
It’s not that you want to be sneaky or clandestine, but rather that you don’t want to commit to a release date and then have to backtrack. According to Marie Claire, season two won’t begin production until spring or summer of 2023, which means we won’t see it until at least 2024.

Later on, when Rhaenyra‘s younger offspring, including Joffrey Velaryon, Aegon “the younger,” and Viserys Targaryen, reach adulthood, they will likely join the cast. Daeron Targaryen, the fictional offspring of Alicent and Viserys, has no chance.
In the TV show’s version, he appears to have been eliminated. I have to wonder what he did wrong. It’s not as certain what will happen to Corlys Velaryon. We think there’s more life in the Sea Snake and expect to see Steve Toussaint assume that position again now that the Driftwood Lord seems to have recovered from the brink of death.
Unless the afterlife isn’t all it’s made up to be, we don’t think Laenor will come back from her false death. We liked his happy ending, but more John Macmillan would always be welcome. Larys Strong, played by Matthew Needham, will undoubtedly return for more of the author’s royal foot fetish and manipulative games.
What Happens in Season 2 of House of the Dragon?
War! That much is undeniable. As House of the Dragon does an excellent job of setting the stage with extensive character histories, we have now danced in the precursor to the upcoming civil war. But now is the moment to take action.
Alicent and Rhaenyra had been trying to steer a calm path through the chaos Viserys unleashed with his dying words up to this point. However, all of it will be blown out of the water by Lucerys’s death, as Rhaenyra will seek instant recompense for the heartless murder of her son.
Aemond probably won’t buy your story that Lucerys’ death was an accident, thanks to her history of bad behaviour. If Aemond wanted revenge, Rhaenyra may try to take the throne and kill Aemond in kind by demanding “an eye for an eye.”
This comes at a bad time, as Alicent and Rhaenyra were just beginning to rebuild their frail bond, and is likely to put more, possibly irreparable, strain on it.
Condal told Entertainment Weekly that the tale is still “very much a story about Alicent and Rhaenyra and their families opposed against each other,” despite season 2 adopting the Game of Thrones model and being a “ensemble piece where you’re following several people.”
As Baela and Rhaena become more deeply involved in the imminent conflict, their respective roles are expected to develop further. Now that the conflict is back on track, we may see more involvement from the various Houses that the show’s audience has come to know and love.
It is unclear how the alliances between Houses Tully, Arryn, Stark, Baratheon, and Lannister will play out. Constant backstabbing and hasty alliances are constant features of political life. Of course, we could always cheat and read the actual source material, George R. R.
Martin’s Fire & Blood (and his World of Ice & Fire companion volume), and get a glimpse into the future. In addition, the programme is already modifying and altering elements to better fit its own trajectory, so the actual outcome may vary slightly from what was originally planned. As for the second season, there will be even more surprises in store.
