Canadian rapper, singer, songwriter, and record producer Tory Lanez (born Daystar Shemuel Shua Peterson on July 27, 1992) is better known simply as Tory Lanez. His mixtape Conflicts of My Soul: The 416 Story, released in August of 2013, is largely responsible for his initial success.
Tory Lanez inked a deal with Benny Blanco, whose label Mad Love Records is distributed by Interscope Records, in 2015. On the Billboard Hot 100, the singles “Say It” and “Luv” from Lanez’s debut studio album, I Told You (2016), peaked at positions 23 and 19, respectively.
Both Lanez’s second studio album (2018’s Memories Don’t Die) and third (2019’s Love Me Now? Earlier this year (in 2019), he released Chixtape 5, his fourth studio album, and it debuted at position #2 on the US Billboard 200.

Canadian hip hop artist Tory Lanez was born Daystar Shemuel Shua Peterson on July 27, 1992, in Brampton. Tory’s father, Sonstar, is from Barbados, and his mother, Luella, was from Curaçao; she passed away at the age of 11 from a rare condition.
Following the passing of his mother, Lanez has stated, “At the time, I acted badly because I lacked the skills necessary to articulate my feelings effectively. When I started making music, I finally had a way to let all that pent-up frustration and rage out.”
When Lanez was around four or five years old, his family uprooted and headed to Montreal, Quebec. Later, they settled in Miami, Florida. Sonstar’s job as a priest and missionary necessitated frequent relocation after Luella’s death. Sonstar uprooted his family to the Peach State after his second marriage.
Hakeem, Tory’s friend, called him “Lanez” because he “liked chasing thrills and dashing through the streets.” Because of his problematic conduct, Tory moved in with his cousin in Queens, New York, in 2006. His grandmother in Toronto didn’t want to care for him, so he moved back in with his aunt.

After seeing a video of Tory freestyling by Lanez, rapper Sean Kingston requested a meeting with him in early 2010. This led to the creation of the mixtape “T.L 2 T.O,” which was published by Lanez in 2009. In 2011, after releasing four mixtapes that year (titled “Playing for Keeps,” “Just Landed,” “One Verse One Hearse,” and “Mr. 1 Verse Killah”), Lanez signed with Kingston’s record company, Time is Money Entertainment.
After “Chixtape,” he released “Sincerely Tory” in 2012, “Conflicts of My Soul: The 416 Story” in 2013, and “Lost Cause” in 2014. (2014). On August 19, 2016, his first full-length studio album, titled “I Told You,” was released by Interscope Records/Mad Love Records.

Tory Lanez Personal Life
When police arrived at a home party that had turned violent in July 2020, they discovered a concealed firearm in Lanez’s car and subsequently arrested him. Megan Thee Stallion, another rapper, was also in the car, and she hurt her foot. It was initially thought that broken glass was to blame for the injuries, but Megan eventually disclosed that it was a gunshot wound and that Tory had fired the shot.
In October 2020, Lanez was charged with three felonies, one of which was assault with a semiautomatic firearm. A protective order was also filed against him, barring him from having any contact with Megan or coming within 100 feet of her.
Tory’s bail was upped to $250,000 from $190,000 when he violated the protection order in August 2021. A number of rappers, including Drake, Jacquees, and Joyner Lucas, have been on opposite sides of Lanez’s feuds. Tory and Jacquees reconciled and went on tour together after their little feud ended. In April of 2017, Lanez gave birth to a son called Kai.

‘Luv’ by Lanez was nominated for a Grammy in the Best R&B Song category in 2017. He has been nominated for multiple Junos and won the award for Rap Recording of the Year for “Shooters” in 2017. In 2019 and 2020, respectively, for “Feel It Too,” which was nominated for both Song of the Year and R&B/Soul Recording of the Year.
Both the Much Music Video Award for Best Hip Hop Video (for “Henny in Hand”) and the NAACP Image Award for Best New Artist (for 2019) were given to Tory. In 2016, he was nominated for Best New Artist at the BET Awards, Best New Hip Hop Artist at the BET Hip Hop Awards, Best International Act at the MOBO Awards, and Best New Artist at the Soul Train Music Awards.
