Who Is Selema Masekela?
American TV host, actor, singer, and sports commentator Selema “Sal” Mabena Masekela was born on August 28, 1971. Masekela is the son of South African jazz artist Hugh Masekela and a Haitian mother, and he was born in Los Angeles. Masekela is older than Nathan Gonzalez, a competitor on Survivor: Cook Islands.
After growing up on Staten Island, New York, he attended Carlsbad High School in Carlsbad, California, where he was a classmate of rapper Method Man. Selema Masekela co-founded Berkela Motion Pictures with Jason Bergh. Masekela’s background compelled him to go to Southern California, where he would get acquainted with skating, snowboarding, and surfing throughout his adolescent years.

When Did Selema Masekela Start His Career?
He began his internship with Transworld Publications in 1992. Transworld Publications is the parent company of TW Snow, TW Skateboarding, and TW Surf. He was a sideline reporter for ESPN during the 2003-2004 NBA season. The Daily 10, a countdown of the “top 10” entertainment stories of the day on the E! network, was co-hosted by Selema Masekela until it was canceled on September 27, 2010. In addition, for 13 years he presided over ESPN’s X Games and Winter X Games. Yet in 2012, he left the network to join NBC and the NBC Sports Network through a contract with Red Bull Media House. He sang “Hello World” in the April 22, 2009 episode of Yo Gabba Gabba titled “Green” on Nick Jr.

He was contacted by ESPN in 2010 to be a reporter for the network’s coverage of the FIFA World Cup in South Africa. Masekela’s father, Hugh, was a journalist for ESPN, and the younger Masekela participated in multiple videos with his father. There was a 10-part documentary on ESPN called “Umlando – Through my Father’s Eyes” that was screened during coverage of the 2010 FIFA World Cup in South Africa.
The TV program focused on Hugh and Selema’s travels around South Africa. Hugo brought his son around to the places he remembered from his childhood.
