When ahead by one point with 28.2 seconds remaining, the conservative strategy is to dribble the ball slowly, force t ohepposing side to foul, and run out of time. Since playing it safe is so boring, Nuggets guard Aaron Gordon dunked the ball over the Suns’ Landry Shamet for the Slam Dunk of the Year.
Officials first called a foul on Gordon’s dunk, but after reviewing the play to see whether Shamet was in the restricted area, they changed their minds and issued a technical. The referees reviewed the footage and determined that Gordon scored and earned an and-1 because Shamet was leaning to draw a foul.

Gordon scored 28 points on the night, including seven dunks, while Jamal Murray scored 26 points (14 in the fourth). Shamet scored 31 points to lead the Suns after Devin Booker was forced to leave the game with a groin ailment after just four minutes (he had missed the previous three games with that injury but tried to give it a go on Christmas). The Suns fought valiantly even without Booker, but Denver prevailed 128-125 in overtime to take sole control of first place in the Western Conference.
With 28.2 seconds left and a one-point lead, the safe play is to dribble slowly, try to draw a foul from the other team, and let time run out. Since being conservative is boring, Nuggets guard Aaron Gordon dunked the ball over the Suns’ Landry Shamet to win the Slam Dunk of the Year award.
