Who was Kathy Whitworth?

Kathy Whitworth joined the tour in 1958 when the Ladies Professional Golf Association was still a fledgling organization. With 88 event victories throughout her lengthy career, she became one of the most successful golfers in both men’s and women’s history.

She shared the A.P. Female Athlete of the Year award with Wimbledon champion Billie Jean King in 1965 and 1967 due to her extraordinary talent. Due to her numerous accomplishments, she was admitted into the World Golf Hall of Fame in 1982.

One of Whitworth’s most outstanding accomplishments was her professional career-long record of 144 tournament victories or runner-up finishes. This includes a remarkable run from 1966 to 1968, during which she won 23 straight tournaments, a feat no other player had ever accomplished before or since. The great golfer Jack Nicklaus only won 18 games throughout that period, so let’s consider this accomplishment.

Whitworth also had a strong desire to help individuals in her community. She gave more than $3 million through golf-related activities to charities throughout her career. She also launched scholarship funds for promising female golfers who lacked the funding to pursue their goals.

Tributes Pour to Kathy Whitworth’s death

Amanda Mcdowell
I read today that your long time roommate Kathy Whitworth passed away today. I remember seeing Kathy coming by the gym, not realizing what a famous icon she was, but instead thinking about how tall and athletic you both were. I happened to be at the dinner theatre one night and saw you with another couple (of women) laughing and having a blast. I was awestruck and still am. I hope heaven has a golf course and y’all play a round together in happiness and peace.
