Bob Marley’s Grandson Jo Mersa Marley Passed Away At the Age of 31

The death of Joseph “Jo Mersa” Marley, son of Stephen Marley and grandson of Bob Marley, was confirmed to Rolling Stone on December 27 by a representative for the late singer. There is no known explanation for the death. Public personalities have spoken out in the aftermath of his death to pay respect to the Jamaican-born musician and the musical legacy he leaves behind.

Prime Minister of Jamaica Andrew Holness tweeted his condolences to Joseph’s friends and colleagues on December 27. He also extended his condolences to the Reggae music fraternity and fans worldwide. He was just 31 years old when he passed away, and his premature death was a devastating blow to the music industry’s hopes for the future.

And in a follow-up statement, Holness said, “May he find Eternal Peace as we mourn his loss during this season of goodwill when we celebrate with family and friends our love for each other.” People’s National Party president Mark J. Golding also lamented the “tragic loss” of Jo Mersa on the app.

Golding described Ziggy Marley on Twitter as “A talented young reggae artiste, son of Stephen Marley & grandson of Bob Marley at only 31 yrs old,” on December 27. My deepest sympathies go out to Stephen and the rest of the family for their tragic loss. Growing up as the youngest sibling of musicians Ziggy, Sharon, and Cedella Marley meant that Jo Mersa was exposed to music at an early age. In 2014, he recounted being invited onto the stage during Melody Makers performances to help with the iconic song “Look Who’s Dancing.”

Jo Mersa told Rolling Stone in 2014 that she and her siblings would “and there was a certain time where they would just give us the mic and we’d do our certain favorite part of the song.” Jo Mersa’s own music would be released before too long. Comfortable, his first EP, was published in 2014, and it combines dancehall, R&B, and electronic dance music (EDM), as noted by Rolling Stone.

Although Jo Mersa was already a legend in the reggae scene, he wanted to go out and try new things with his music, which led to this project. Telling Rolling Stone in 2014, “I am one of the new generations of Marleys, but I am still experimenting at the same time,” he elaborated on this statement. My goal is to create something brand new out of my heritage.

Jo Mersa would continue to release music after the release of her first EP. The seven-song EP Eternal is scheduled for release in 2021, after 2020’s release of Everlasting (Remixes).
