Greif was born in Sawbridgeworth, Hertfordshire, England. He was born in a house that King Henry VIII had given to Anne Boleyn as a gift. He went to Sloane Grammar School and was the school champion in both athletics and swimming.
He also competed for his school and county in athletics at the White City Stadium and other places. He went to Regent Street Polytechnic for a short time, then worked as a troubleshooter at a company that made TVs and radiograms and as a negotiator in a small West End real estate agency before applying to drama school.

Greif liked to play golf. He was a member of the Stage Golfing Society and had been its president before. He got married in 1980, and in 1982, his wife gave birth to twin boys.

Later, he was asked to join the National again on the South Bank under Peter Hall in a revival of Death of a Salesman. He also worked with Felicity Kendal and Frances de la Tour in Fallen Angels, Joseph Fiennes in George Dillon, and Lesley Manville in Six Degrees of Separation. He was in three plays by his friend, the East End playwright and poet Bernard Kops, at The Jewish Museum, the JW3, and the National Portrait Gallery to celebrate the author’s 85th and 90th birthdays.
