American guitarist and singer Eddie Vedder is a household name for his work with the influential alternative rock group Pearl Jam. According to Rolling Stone, he is the seventh-best lead singer of all time. Having been gifted with a unique sound and strong vocals, Vedder expanded the boundaries of alternative rock and altered the way the world saw it.

Early Life of Edde Vedder
Vedder was born Edward Louis Severson III to Karen Lee Vedder and Edward Louis Severson Jr. on December 23, 1964, in the Chicago neighborhood of Evanston, Illinois. Vedder was a baby when his parents split up in 1965. The couple divorced, and his mom quickly remarried a guy called Peter Mueller.
Vedder was given up for adoption and made to believe that Mueller was his original father; he even adopted the surname Mueller for a while. Norwegian (Severson) as well as Dutch, German, and Danish may be found in Vedder’s family tree (Vedder). Vedder’s family ran a foster care home in Evanston, where they took in a total of seven children.
Vedder and his three younger half-brothers relocated to San Diego County, California, in the mid-1970s. Once the divorce was finalized, Vedder found out that Mueller was really his stepfather and not his biological father.

Vedder had a short encounter with his real father, Severson, when he was young, although at the time he thought Severson was only an old family acquaintance. Severson had already passed away from multiple sclerosis by the time Vedder found out the truth. Before graduating from San Dieguito High School, Vedder moved out to an apartment and got a job working overnights at a pharmacy store in Encinitas.
Vedder quit high school due to competing priorities. After moving to Chicago with the rest of his family, he decided to adopt his mother’s maiden name and legally alter his name to Vedder. Eddie worked as a server in the 1980s, during which time he completed his General Equivalency Diploma and enrolled at a local community college.
It was in 1984 when Vedder and his then-girlfriend Beth Liebling and their mutual buddy Frank moved back to San Diego. He was always on the go, between jobs like his contract security gig at La Jolla’s La Valencia Hotel and home demo recording. During his career, Vedder has played with a number of bands from the San Diego region, including Surf and Destroy and the Butts.
Brad Wilk, later of Rage Against the Machine and Audioslave, was a member of a band named Indian Style. The progressive funk rock band Bad Radio, from San Diego, recruited Vedder as their singer in 1988. Before Vedder’s arrival, the band played a style of music inspired by Duran Duran, but following his arrival, they shifted to a more alternative rock style reminiscent of the Red Hot Chili Peppers.
Edde Vedder Personal Life
Vedder went to what is now San Dieguito Academy, formerly San Dieguito High School. After a Pearl Jam performance in San Diego in 2006, Vedder decided to dedicate the money made to his high school’s theater to Clayton E. Liggett, who taught him acting. When Vedder was a senior in high school, Liggett served as a role model for him. Hearing of Liggett’s death in 1995 inspired Vedder to write “Long Road” (from Merkin Ball).
In the early ’90s, Vedder shared a Seattle basement with Jerry Cantrell of Alice in Chains. Cantrell was the guitarist and singer for the band. On the evening of April 20, 2002, Vedder learned of the death of Alice in Chains frontman Layne Staley, a friend of his, he penned the song “4/20/02” (from Lost Dogs) (though Staley had actually died over two weeks earlier on April 5, his body was found on April 19).
