The whole UFC fan community has spoken out against Douglas Crosby. After he declared Paddy Pimblett the winner of Pimblett vs. Gordon at UFC 282, the MMA judge came under fire from fans. Crosby also played a role in another contentious decision at Bellator 289, between Raufeon Stots and Danny Sabatello.
At Bellator 289. Crosby scored all five rounds with a 50-45 decision in Sabatello’s favour. Although Stots won by split decision, the crowd could not stop talking about Crosby’s “terrible” scorecard. This marked the first occasion in mixed martial arts when the losing competitor was awarded a score of 50-45.
Doug Crosby had a fantastic weekend overall. The veteran MMA judge has been criticized for two scorecards in as many days, first for the main event between Danny Sabatello and Raufeon Stots at Bellator 289 in Uncasville and then for the co-main event between Paddy Pimblett and Jared Gordon at UFC 282 in Las Vegas.
On December 9th, Crosby recorded MMA history when he scored Sabatello-Stots 50-45 in favour of Sabatello (10-9 x5), becoming Sabatello the first fighter ever to have a scorecard of 50-45 recorded for a loser in the MMADecisions.com database. “Supa” was given a split decision victory by judges Eric Colon and Bryan Miner, who both saw the fight going to Stots by a score of 48-47.
Not even close, according to the commission. In a letter to the Mohegan Daily Times, Mohegan’s director of athletics Mike Mazzulli said, “One judge had Sabatello winning all five rounds, which is contentious” (via MMA Fighting). Finally, the ruling went in favour of Stots, which was the right call.

To make the most of this opportunity, I have notified the three judges that we would be evaluating the bout together. Here you can read our play-by-play of Bellator 289. It was also scored in favour of Stots. That “this is a very serious problem” was written by him shows how seriously he took things.
When it comes to the welfare of its athletes, the Mohegan Tribe Athletic Department has always been on the side of the combatants. The Mohegan Tribe Athletic Department has, in the past, taken disciplinary action against officials who fell short of expectations. Whenever punishments of this nature are handed down, they are kept out of the public eye.
The following night, Crosby scored the Pimblett fight 29-28 in favour of “The Baddy,” despite the fact that 23 of the 24 media outlets presenting UFC 282 results and play-by-play scored the match in favour of Gordon. Ron McCarthy, son of legendary MMA referee “Big” John McCarthy, also submitted a “wrong” scorecard (more on that here).
Most certainly, the Nevada Athletic Commission will do nothing. Although there have been numerous problems with MMA judging in the past, there doesn’t seem to be any rush to completely revamp the system or, at the very least, provide a more thorough training and review process for the officials who are assigned to fights. Until then, all we can do is keep using the same old hand-and-judge joke.
