D.c. Rally Backing Jan. 6 Riot Defendants Draws Meager Turnout

D.C. rally took place on behalf of the more than 600 people who were charged in the January 6 Capitol Hill riot. This riot drew a lot of crowd of a couple of hundred demonstrators on Saturday, along with media and security personnel for those  seeking grievances on behalf of defendants known as  “political prisoners.”

The small crowd was gathered few steps away where the worst violence took place earlier this year. The incident was met by a huge law enforcement presence. Horse and bicycle-mounted police officers surrounded the gathering along with a Metropolitan Police Department helicopter that flew overhead.  Capitol Police Chief Thomas Manger and MPD Chief Robert Contee III both were present at the rally.

The people who organized the rally called it  “Justice for J6,” which indicates the date on which supporters of the previous President Donald Trump attacked the U.S. Capitol while attempting to prevent the 2020 election results.

Protestors had to face a lot of local, state, and federal law enforcement and members of the news channels exceeding event attendees.

U.S. Capitol Police arrested a few on  Saturday in this nonviolent demonstration according to the updates online. According to the police, those were arrested who had weapons, possession of a firearm, and probation violation.

Chief Robert Contee police of Washington Metropolitan said to NBC News that the crowd was “about what they expected” and the presence of police presence might have deterred attendance.

Police on Saturday had increased the security around the Capitol, planting fences all around the Capitol grounds, such as the  Supreme Court, the Library of Congress, and other congressional office buildings.

Defense Secretary Lloyd Austin said on Friday that one hundred National Guard troops were arranged to protect the Capitol. In Washington, U.S., September 18, 2021, a riot police officer was put in charge during the rally to support the defendants of conducting any illegal activities in the January 6 attack on the Capitol

Matt Braynard, staff from the previous Trump campaign had organized the rally, and also told CNBC that he expected the protest to be peaceful.

The Jan. 6 Capitol riot started just after Trump, said his speech at a rally outside the White House, encouraged the crowd to vote for the Congress and fight against the certification of Joe Biden’s election as president.

Four people lost their lives that day in connection with the riot. This also includes a woman who was shot by a police officer as she was trying to move through a window toward the House of Representatives chamber.

Capitol Police Officer Brian Sicknick died the next day after not being in his senses for hours after he was attacked by rioters. Four police officers who responded to the attack have died by suicide since the attack.

More than 600 people have been arrested on the riot of the Jan. 6 attack, and more than 50 of them were pleaded guilty to various crimes. Six people have been found guilty in court, in accordance with the Justice Department.
