According to multiple sources, this week, the Biden administration is supposed to announce that no officials from the US government will attend the 2022 Beijing Olympics, executing a diplomatic boycott of the games.
The step would entitle the US to deliver a message on the world level to China without halting US athletes from taking part. The National Security Council, which has been discussing the boycott in closed doors, refused to comment.
Last Month Biden Said He Was Thinking Over a Diplomatic Boycott
Earlier this month, President Joe Biden told reporters that he was considering a diplomatic boycott since Democratic and Republican lawmakers, along with House Speaker Nancy Pelosi, backed up for one in protest of human rights abuses of China.
Though a complete boycott is not anticipated, which means that the US athletes will still be entitled to participate. The last time when the US fully boycotted the Olympics was in 1980 under the presidency of then-President Jimmy Carter.

Responding to the news, Beijing cautioned it would take “resolute countermeasures” against the Biden administration in case the diplomatic boycott moved along.

At a news conference on Monday, spokesperson for Chinese Foreign Ministry Zhao Lijian stated “The US should stop politicizing sports and hyping up the so-called ‘diplomatic boycott’ so as not to affect China-US dialogue and cooperation in important areas,” continuing further, Zhao called the probable boycott “a stain on the spirit of the Olympic charter” and a “sensationalist and politically manipulative” step by US politicians.
The virtual summit held earlier this month between Biden and Chinese President Xi Jinping witnessed as some of the most crucial diplomatic discussions of Biden’s presidency brought no remarkable improvements.
