Everything About Stevie Wonder Early Life and Career
On May 13, 1950, Stevland Hardaway Judkins entered the world in Saginaw, Michigan. The third of six children born to singer-songwriter Lula Mae Hardaway and minister Calvin Judkins, he is the most famous. The Wonder was born six weeks early.
He went blind from retinopathy of prematurity, a condition caused by the high levels of oxygen in his incubator and the fact that he was born prematurely. When Stevie was four years old, his parents separated. Their mother took Stevie and his siblings and relocated them to Detroit.
He used to be a member of the Baptist church choir when he was a young man. In addition to the piano and drums, Stevie also picked up the harmonica at a young age, demonstrating his natural musical talent.
Wonder’s visual impairment enhanced his sensitivity to sound, allowing him to compose music full of rich, vivid tones and textures. Eventually, Motown CEO Berry Gordy noticed his talent and signed with the label in 1961. He was 11.
Motown put Stevie Wonder’s royalties in a trust until he reached 21 as part of a five-year deal because he was still a minor. He and his mother received a weekly allowance of $2.50, almost $21 in today’s money. His debut CD, “Tribute to Uncle Ray,” featured cover versions of Ray Charles songs and was published when he was only 11 years old.
Following “The Jazz Soul of Little Stevie,” an album of instrumentals was published. Towards the year’s close in 1962, Stevie signed up with the Motortown Revue. The album “Recorded Live: The 12-Year-Old Genius,” featuring his 20-minute performance at Chicago’s Regal Theater, was released in 1963. In particular, the album’s lead track, “Fingertips,” was a smash.
In the years 1968-1970, Wonder had a string of successful singles, including “I Was Made to Love Her,” “For Once in My Life,” and “Signed, Sealed, Delivered I’m Yours.” His first self-produced track, “Signed, Sealed, Delivered I’m Yours,” became a smash hit.
When only 20 years old, Wonder wed fellow musician and singer-songwriter Syreeta Wright in September 1970. The following album, 1971’s “Where I’m Coming From,” featured contributions from both Wright and Wonder. On May 13, 1971, Wonder turned 21 and opted out of his Motown contract.
Wonder’s new contract with Motown Records set a precedent by increasing his royalty income significantly. In March 1972, Wonder released “Music of My Mind” on Motown. Both “Superstition” and “You Are the Sunshine of My Life” from the late 1972 album “Talking Book” became massive hits. The two tracks took home a total of three Grammys between them.
“Higher Ground” (No. 4 on the pop charts) and “Living for the City” both appeared on the 1973 album “Innervisions” (No. 8). Both songs topped the R&B charts. Three further Grammys were bestowed for “Innervisions,” including Album of the Year. Rolling Stone magazine has placed this album at number 23 on its list of the 500 greatest albums of all time.
