Grace Stanke, a University of Wisconsin nuclear engineering student, won the competition by playing the violin and persuading the judges to think favorably of atomic energy.

There is a new Miss America in town!

Wisconsin Miss At the Mohegan Sun Arena in Uncasville, Connecticut, Grace Stanke, a University of Wisconsin student studying nuclear engineering, was named Miss America 2023 on Thursday.

The year 2023’s Miss America will be Miss Wisconsin

Grace Stanke, a nuclear engineering student at the University of Wisconsin–Madison and a 20-year-old from Wausau, is the third woman from Wisconsin to win the title of Miss America. Among the others are Miss America winners Laura Koeppeler of Kenosha in 2012 and Terry Meeuwsen of De Pere from 1973.

Stanke dazzled the panel of judges with her responses during the competition’s Red Carpet round and final round, and she gave a fantastic violin performance during the talent segment.

The first runner-up was Miss New York, Taryn Delanie Smith, while the second was Miss Texas, Averie Bishop.

Miss Nevada Heather Renner, Miss Hawaii Lauren Teruya, Miss Oregon Sophia Takla, Miss Ohio Elizabette Nies, Miss Indiana Elizabeth Hallal, and Miss Illinois Monica Mia Jones were among the Top 11 finalists, including 10 other women chosen by the judges and one by American voters. Monica Mia Jones was the final contestant to be eliminated.

Five women proceeded to the final phase, where they were questioned about issues they were passionate about, including Miss West Virginia Elizabeth Wench and Miss Georgia Kelsey Hollis.

During the segment, Stanke said she is “excited” to have opportunities to discuss significant issues as Miss America and represent “the women who can.”

“As Miss America, I am representing this organization. If they ask further questions, I can preface by saying, ‘This isn’t the organization’s point of view. This is my point of view as Grace Stanke,’ and I can go on to state it — especially when it comes to things like nuclear energy and so many other hot political topics,” she explained.

Stanke has now replaced Emma Broyles, a Korean American who made history by becoming the first Miss Alaska contestant to win the Miss America crown in the event’s century-long history.

“Being the first Korean Miss America that we know of is cool because I think about when I was younger and I was growing up and not seeing Korean women who looked like me in popular media,” Broyles, who was 20 at the time, told PEOPLE. “I remember I was ashamed of my heritage and avoiding embracing it at all costs.”

“Now that I’m older,” she added, “I’ve been able to embrace my ethnicity and my background, embrace the journey that my grandparents made 50 or so years ago.”

During Thursday’s competition, Stanke talked about her interest in nuclear engineering while playing “Storm,” a piece from the Summer section of Vivaldi’s “Four Seasons,” on the violin.

Stanke is the daughter of Darrin and Jenny Stanke and a recent alumna of Wausau West High School.

At the height of the COVID-19 pandemic, she served as Miss Madison for two years, and after placing in the top 10 at Miss Wisconsin, she returned to the stage this year to become Miss Wisconsin.
