Who Was Barry Lane?
With 693 starts on the European Tour (now DP World Tour), Barry Lane is fourth on the all-time record of tournament participation. When he took up golf at the ripe old age of 14, he quickly rose through the ranks to become an assistant professional at Downshire Golf Club, not far from Bracknell.
When the Englishman initially joined the Tour in 1982, he won his first tournament at the Royal Mid-Surrey Golf Club in 1987: the Equity & Law Challenge. The next year, he won the Scottish Open by three strokes at Gleneagles, defeating José Rivero and Sandy Lyle in the process. This triumph was his first ever in the professional arena.

Ryder Cup
From 1992 through 1995, Lane was on a winning streak that began at the Mercedes German Masters and ended with him placing no lower than 11th on the European Tour Order of Merit. Even though he was one of four rookies on Bernard Gallacher’s side in the 1993 Ryder Cup, he had already won the Canon European Masters in 1993.
The next year, at the Turespaa Open de Baleares, he won for the fourth time on the Tour. Then, after more than a decade, in 2004, he won the British Masters at Forest of Arden on the European Tour by three strokes over Angel Cabrera and Eduardo Romero.
Playing with Barry Lane on tour was like playing with your best friend except he’d beat you…. that didn’t seem to matter, you were pleased to see him do well.
Barry loved golf!
It’s sad 😢 to say goodbye.

As an added bonus, in 1995, Lane won the Andersen Consulting World Championship of Golf, the forerunner of the annual WGC Match Play championship hosted in Austin. After beating David Frost 2Up of South Africa in the final, he not only took home the trophy but also the first prize of $1 million.
Along with his three World Cup appearances for England, four Dunhill Cup appearances, and three UBS Cup appearances for the Rest of the World squad, he also participated in the UBS Cup. While in Mauritius for the 2022 Legends Tour’s last event, the MCB Tour Championship, in December, Lane presented Adilson Da Silva of Brazil with the newly renamed Barry Lane Rookie of the Year Trophy.
After turning 50 in 2010, Lane had immediate success on the European Seniors Tour. His first major victory came in the Cleveland Golf/Srixon Scottish Senior Open, which he went on to successfully defend the following year.
