Glass Onion Kanye West Mural Explained: How People React to This?

After watching Knives Out, take a moment to ponder the secrets of Glass Onion. Looking back at 2019, we can see Looper and Star Wars: The Last Jedi filmmaker Rian Johnson directed a murder-mystery caper full of humor and mystery. In his portrayal of the detective Benoit Blanc, Daniel Craig solved the case.

However, he faces an entirely different case in the 2022 follow-up. After a brief run in theatres, the film will be available on Netflix on Friday, December 23rd, 2022. Benoit is invited to the billionaire computer magnate Miles Bron’s private island (played by Edward Norton).

The intended event is a murder mystery party. Still, it is immediately derailed when a real-life murder sends the evening into disarray and confusion. Speaking of ambiguity, why does Glass Onion have a Kanye West mural?

When Miles welcomes his friends into his house, they are all seated at a large table and a mural with Kanye West’s visage is visible beyond the room’s pillars. On the other hand, the mural shows him as a robed messiah-like figure. The visuals make me think of the American rapper’s smash Power music video from his 2010 album My Beautiful Dark Twisted Fantasy.

Do check:

According to Forbes, Kanye made some anti-semitic remarks in October 2022, which prompted some viewers to voice their opinions over the mural’s presence.

One Twitter user asked, “Why is there a godlike Kanye West artwork behind Edward Norton as he says Mazel Tov?” Mazel Tov is a Jewish expression that means “congratulations,” The tweet’s author referred to recent remarks made by Kanye towards the Jewish community. It’s important to note that Glass Onion was filmed in 2021.

In the end, understanding the mural’s inclusion requires thinking about the man whose home it is. As far as Miles’ personality is concerned, it’s not difficult to understand why he would find Kanye’s larger-than-life persona, popularity, and profile admirable and inspiring.

He always mentions famous people because he is fascinated with them, whether he is talking about Jared Leto giving him his hard kombucha or Jeremy Renner giving him his small batch of spicy sauce—both of which are made up.  Serena Williams, an American tennis player, is also his trainer.

Still, she has become more of a prisoner to Miles’ breaks, sitting there bored and confined to the gym’s TV because it is her status that he is interested in rather than putting in the effort himself.

This is further established in the movie’s big reveal, which implies that Miles has long profited from and thrives off of affiliation with others who have accomplished great things. If a character had mentioned the painting, there’s no doubt Miles would have had a Kanye story to boast about to wow his guests.

Rian’s a Craftsman of Puzzles

In a recent interview with Toisto, Edward spoke candidly about his collaboration with Rian on the film Glass Onion:

“Rian’s a craftsman of puzzles, but he’s also extremely relaxed. He doesn’t treat the script like it’s set in stone. He’s confident enough in his constructions, and we all leave that to him. We talk about it, certainly, to check that something works. But on the whole, the mechanism is in his hands.”

He added: “If I riff around manifestations of Miles’ pomposity, Rian is wide open. If you can get a laugh out of him, that’s the best thing.”

You can now watch Glass Onion: A Knives Out Mystery on Netflix.
