Authorities on December 30 stated that 28-year-old Bryan Kohberger had been charged with four charges of murder in connection with the stabbing murders of four students at the University of Idaho. Four students at the University of Idaho were brutally murdered, and the community of Moscow, Idaho was on edge for over seven weeks while police sought for their perpetrator.

Bryan Kohberger, 28, was arrested in Pennsylvania on Friday and charged with four counts of murder and one count of felony burglary in connection with the stabbing deaths of Madison Mogen, 21, Kaylee Goncalves, 21, Xana Kernodle, 20, and Ethan Chapin, also 20. Authorities had remained silent throughout the initial investigation.

Kohberger agreed to his extradition on January 3 and was taken to Idaho the following day. On January 12, he will go to his preliminary hearing to enter a plea to the allegations against him. Having returned to Idaho, the probable cause affidavit detailing the circumstances behind Kohberger’s arrest may now be made public.

According to the affidavit read by PEOPLE, a sheath from the knife used in the stabbings was left at the site on the bed where Mogen and Goncalves were discovered dead. According to the affidavit, here is where investigators discovered Kohberger’s DNA. According to the papers, agents sifted through garbage at Kohberger’s parents’ Pennsylvania home in search of a DNA match.

The affidavit states that one of the surviving roommates saw the killer, described as “a figure clad in black clothing and a mask,” pass past her as he fled the crime site and that she heard sobbing. According to the affidavit, DNA evidence and mobile phone signals placed Kohberger near the crime site.

A white automobile, dubbed “Suspect Vehicle 1” in the affidavit, was allegedly spotted speeding away from the residence’s vicinity at around 4:20 a.m. This document states that Kohberger’s phone and car returned to the site between 9:12 and 9:21 in the morning. According to the affidavit, Kohberger’s phone allegedly “pinged” at least twelve times before November 13, 2022, near the 1122 King Road residence where the murders took place.

Kohberger was a criminal justice and criminology Ph.D. candidate at Washington State University when he committed the murders. About eight miles separate the university in Pullman, Washington, from the Moscow, Idaho home where the four students were slain. Police had been looking for a white Hyundai Elantra, and on the day of the suspect’s arrest, someone stole one from the Kohbergers’ driveway.

A group of close friends at the University of Idaho, including students Goncalves, Mogen, Kernodle, and Chapin, were brutally murdered on the second and third floors of an off-campus apartment early on the morning of November 13. Two other housemates were there at the time of the incident, but fortunately, they were also uninjured. The remaining housemates were first disregarded as suspects.

According to the affidavit, one of the two surviving roommates was on the second level when Kernodle and Chapin were slain, contradicting prior reports that the two had slept through the attack on the first floor. The affidavit claims that Kernodle was using TikTok at 4:12 a.m. when she got a DoorDash order at roughly 4 a.m. Chapin was spending the night at his fiancée Kernodle’s place, who also happened to be roommates with Goncalves and Mogen.

So yet, no information on the killings’ motivation has been made public. Moscow Mayor Arthur D. Bettge issued a message of gratitude to law enforcement on Friday.

“I understand that law enforcement’s inability to share information during the course of the investigation has been frustrating, but their primary duty was to protect the integrity of the investigation and find a resolution to the case for the victims and their families,” the statement reads, in part. “I hope this arrest and subsequent criminal justice system process will begin to provide comfort and closure to the victim’s families, our community, and the nation.”
