Police shot and killed a recording engineer who had won a Grammy. They were looking into claims that he had taken his wife and stepdaughter and held them at gunpoint.
Metropolitan Nashville Police Department public affairs director Don Aaron said in a “critical incident briefing” that Mark J. Capps, who is 54 years old, allegedly pointed a gun at police who came to help with the kidnapping.
Aaron said that SWAT officers went to the home on Summit Run Pl. to carry out a warrant against Capps for two counts of aggravated kidnapping and two counts of aggravated assault “for holding his 60-year-old wife and his 23-year-old stepdaughter in the home at gunpoint during the night.”
Aaron said that Capps woke up the mother and daughter at 3 a.m. and pointed a gun at them. They said that he forced them into the living room with a gun and wouldn’t let them leave.

They said that Capps kept pointing the gun at them and started saying that if they tried to call anyone, he would kill them and “any police who showed up at the house,” Aaron said.
The two victims told the director of public affairs that they were able to get away when Capps fell asleep. They left the house and drove to the police station in Hermitage. Later, just before 2 p.m., the police issued an arrest warrant and told SWAT about the situation. Aaron said this was because Capps had access to guns and had been violent the night before.
When SWAT got to the scene, they were able to get close to the house without Capps knowing. He then “opened the front door” while holding a gun.

Kendall Coon, a SWAT officer with 14 years of experience, told Capps to put his hands up. “Officer Coon deemed that Capps movements posed an immediate imminent threat and fired,” Aaron continued.
Officers can be heard yelling at Capps from the door, “Show me your hands!” The officers then go into the house after shots are fired at the glass door. Aaron said that Capps had died a short time later, before a picture of the gun Capps was holding was shown.
Aaron said that the case is being looked into by both the Tennessee Bureau of Investigation and the MNPD. He said that the investigation just started and that it “will take time to complete.” The TBI and the Davidson County District Attorney’s Office are also looking into it, and the MNPD is looking into the officers’ actions to make sure they “meet the high standards expected of our officers.”

Billboard says that Capps worked with Olivia Newton-John, The Chicks, Big & Rich, and Barry Manilow over the course of his career. Jimmy Capps, who died, played lead guitar for the Grand Ole Opry’s house band. Capps shared four Grammy Awards for best polka album with Jimmy Sturr & His Orchestra from 2006 to 2009.
