Katie Porter’s Reading of This Book During a Speaker Fight Goes Viral

During a week when Republicans were fighting over who would be the next House speaker, Democratic Representative Katie Porter became a hit on the internet because of the books she chose to read.

On Friday, a picture was taken of the California lawmaker in the lower chamber reading Mark Manson’s book The Subtle Art of Not Giving a F***.

Over the past week, a small group of conservative Republicans has made it harder to choose the next House speaker. Representative Kevin McCarthy, a Republican from California, won in the 15th round of voting, but not before he gave some of his ultraconservative colleagues some things they wanted.

Both sides of the political divide were upset by the lawmakers who didn’t vote. Mike Rogers, a Republican from Alabama, even tried to hit Matt Gaetz, a Republican from Florida, because he wouldn’t play ball.

Even though Republicans were fighting among themselves, Porter seems to have tried her best to find her Zen and in the process gained some fans.

“You win Katie Porter. You win,” Democratic pollster and strategist Matt McDermott tweeted a photo of the congressman reading the book.

Others called Porter an “icon” or told her “bravo” to show their approval. The popular left-wing blogger Brooklyn Dad Defiant tweeted, “Katie Porter, y’all,” followed by four laughing emojis.

Porter got praise on social media for more than just the message in the title. The congresswoman also seemed to match her outfit to the book by wearing a bright orange blouse that almost matched the color of the book’s cover.

Some Twitter users seemed to see themselves in the Democratic representative. Georgetown professor Dan Moynihan wrote, “Katie Porter is all of us.” Mike Sington, who used to be a senior executive at NBCUniversal, asked a good hypothetical question.

“Is it possible to love Katie Porter even more?” he tweeted. The author, Manson, gave his own opinion on Saturday morning. He shared the picture of Porter holding his book and the caption, “We made it into Congress, fam.”

When asked for more information, Manson wrote to Newsweek on Saturday: “That’s the most productive thing Congress has done all year.”

The Subtle Art of Not Giving a F*** topped bestseller lists after it came out in 2016, and it was recently made into a full-length movie. Critics have called it a “generation-defining self-help guide” that argues the key to happiness isn’t trying to stay positive at all costs, but rather getting “better at handling adversity.”
