Ex-Super Bowl Champion Charles Johnston Committed Suicide, As Per Medical Examiner

The North Carolina state medical examiner’s office said Monday in a report that former NFL wide receiver Charles Johnson, who won a Super Bowl with Tom Brady and the New England Patriots in 2001, killed himself in July.

In the ME documents officials said that Johnson died from what looked like a drug overdose. He was only 50 years old.

Johnson was found dead in a Raleigh, North Carolina, hotel room on July 17, a day after his wife reported him missing. Before the ME’s report came out this week, no one knew what caused the death.

According to USA Today, the documents show that officials said Johnson had oxycodone, hydrocodone, and mirtazapine in his body at the time of his death, even though he did not have any active prescriptions for these drugs.

The outlet had said before that the former NFL wide receiver said his time in the league left him with disabilities. After being picked in the first round of the NFL draught in 1994, Johnson played for the Steelers, Eagles, Patriots, and Bills over the course of nine years.

Following his death, the North Carolina high school he had been working at said in a statement he would “be missed by so many, especially your Husky Family.”

Johnson played in the NFL for nine years after the Steelers took him in the 17th round of the 1994 draught. He played for Pittsburgh for his first five seasons.

In his third year, he led the team in receiving yards (1,008) and was 10th in the league in yards per catch (16.8). He is the 16th-best Steelers receiver of all time. Before he retired after the 2002 season, he also played for the Patriots, Eagles, and Bills.
