Death of a Nursing Student in Cancun, Mexico Accident

Last week, a woman from Massachusetts died while she was on vacation in Mexico. Leah Pearse, a nursing student at Simmons University who was 20 years old, died on January 6 after going to the beach in Cancun and then going back to her Airbnb.

An obituary says that the keys to her room were locked inside her third-floor apartment, and Pearse tried to get in by climbing onto the balcony. “Tragically she slipped, fell, and died instantly,” according to the obit.

Pearse was born in Newburyport, Massachusetts, and spent 5 years at Simmons University getting her Master’s in nursing. She worked at Mass General Hospital as a certified nurse’s aide.

“Leah needed an outlet for her love and desire to help others, so her greatest goal in life was to become the best nurse in the world,” the obit states.

In a statement to CBS News, Simmons University President Lynn Perry Wooten said that the death of Pearse broke the hearts of everyone on campus.

“Known for her confidence, compassion, and sense of humour, Leah brought out the best in others. Her lifelong goal was to become a nurse and she was an outstanding student in the accelerated five-year Bachelor of Science and Master of Science nursing degree programme,” Wooten said.

“We extend our deepest thoughts and condolences to Leah’s family, friends, and all those in our community impacted by this tragedy. Counseling and support services are available for students and employees.”

The obituary says that Pearse worked hard and found happiness in life. The death notice says that Leah was having a great time in college and making friends with everyone she met.

“If you knew Leah, you know she put everything on the table right off the bat. People felt they knew her after just the first interaction, and often they loved her immediately for the ease her presence brought to every room she entered.”

Pearse finished high school at the Classical Academy at Haverhill in 2020 and then moved to Boston. About an hour north of Boston is Haverhill.
