The Last of Us HBO Episode 1 Recap: What Happened With the Fedra Guard and Joel?

The Last of Us HBO Episode 1 Recap: In The Last of Us episode 1, Joel sells pills to a FEDRA security guard. What are these pills, what do they do, and where do they come from?

The Last of Us’ long-awaited debut finally happened on Sunday, January 15 with the release of episode 1 on HBO and HBO Max. We are introduced to a post-apocalyptic society full of mystery, shady dealings, and potential revolutionaries.

However, since there are no longer any drug stores, fans are interested in what the pills Joel sells the FEDRA guard are, what symptoms they cause when used, and where they come from.

The Last of Us HBO Episode 1 Recap

Joel sells a bag of three-month-old “Hydro” Hydrocodone pills to a FEDRA guard in the first episode of The Last of Us. Dihydrocodeinone, another name for hydrocodone, is an opioid frequently used to alleviate pain and suppress coughing.

The medicine causes constipation, nausea, drowsiness, and the activation of opioid receptors in the brain and spinal cord to provide its desired effects. With 10 mg being equal to ingesting 10 mg of morphine orally, hydrocodone is a very potent opioid. More hazardous adverse effects include hypotension, seizures, QT prolongation, respiratory depression, and serotonin syndrome.

“Hydrocodone is used to relieve severe pain. Hydrocodone is only used to treat people who are expected to need medication to relieve severe pain around-the-clock for a long time and who cannot be treated with other medications or treatments. Hydrocodone extended-release (long-acting) capsules or extended-release tablets should not be used to treat pain that can be controlled by medication that is taken as needed.” – MedlinePlus.

Joel is asked where these Hydro tablets came from by a FEDRA security guard. Joel responds that as long as they are authentic, it doesn’t matter where they came from. The guard says that if the pills are genuine, they must have been made in a factory inside the Atlanta QZ.

“If it’s real, it’s from Atlanta. FEDRRA’s got a factory down there in the QZ. Supposedly [the factory] only makes two things. Pills and bullets, bullets and pills.” – FEDRA guard, The Last of Us episode 1.

Joel replies that it gets harder to fall asleep the more people you kill, which is why selling Hydro pills is such a lucrative side job for him.

What Happened With the Fedra Guard and Joel in Episode 1?

The FEDRA guard is also arranging a truck for Joel, which he says is “all set” after he buys the Hydro tablets following the depot’s most recent purchase.

Joel will pay 600 (unknown currency) for the truck, and four other parties will be engaged in the transaction. But the car also requires a battery, which Joel intends to purchase from the Fireflies; the two decide on 200 for the guard and 200 each for the four depot employees.

The guard then advises Joel to remain off the streets for the upcoming evenings since the Firefly revolutionary group will likely cause havoc.

When Joel, Tess, and Ellie run into the same guard urinating on a nearby wall in The Last of Us episode 1, they can leave the QZ border. The guard commands the group to go on their knees and brandishes a machine pistol while explaining that the crime is punished by hanging.

The guard tries to check the group for the fungal infection since he is curious about why they are outside in the first place, but Ellie stabs him in the leg before the results are in. Joel seizes the opportunity to knock the security guy to the ground, where he then beats the man to death.
