Ron Menor was a politician in Hawaii for a long time. He died at age 67. On Tuesday night, Gov. Josh Green said that Menor had died on Monday.
“Late this afternoon, we were informed by Pat Menor, wife of Ron Menor, that our dear friend and former colleague passed away suddenly on Monday from an unexpected medical emergency,” Green said Tuesday in a statement.
Menor worked on the Honolulu City Council and in the state Senate and House of Representatives. From 1982 to 2008, he was in the state legislature. From 2013 to 2021, he was on the City Council. Sherry Menor-McNamara, president and CEO of the Chamber of Commerce in Hawaii, said that many people will “sorely miss” Menor.

“My cousin, Ron, was truly dedicated to public service and wanted nothing more than to make Hawaii a better place to live. He inspired my pursuit of public office because of his unwavering passion for serving others,” Menor-McNamara said in a statement.
“He was someone I looked up to since I was a little kid. He will be sorely missed by his family, friends and the many people he represented so well.”
Menor’s most recent run for office was in 2022 when he ran for the District 8 seat on the City Council. He and Council member Val Okimoto, who ended up being the winner, both made it to the general election after getting 32.4% and 34% of the votes cast in the August primary.

Menor lost the general election in November. During his last campaign, Menor focused on issues that had to do with “quality of life.” He wanted to fix the city’s roads and sidewalks, and he worked to make sure that drivers and pedestrians were safe. He also liked the idea of giving people more affordable housing options.
In an interview with the Honolulu Star-Livestream Advertiser’s show “Spotlight Hawaii” in October, he said that he wanted to fill the open positions in the Honolulu Police Department. He said that as a politician with a lot of experience, he would be able to “hit the ground running” to solve these problems.

As a politician, he worked for the people of Mililani, Waipio, Wahiawa, Waipahu, and Pearl City. He was the head of several committees in the Honolulu City Council, such as the Zoning, Planning, and Housing Committee and the Executive Matters and Legal Affairs Committee.
At one point, he was also the head of the whole Council. He had even thought about running for mayor of Honolulu in 2020. “Jaime and I send our love to Patty and the Menor ohana,” Green said. “We remember fondly Ron’s passionate service to the people of Hawaii over the many years he served in the Legislature and on the Honolulu City Council.”
