Kim Kardashian Buys Princess Diana Amethyst Cross Pendant at Auction

The jewellery Kim Kardashian has just got a lot more royal. At Sotheby’s annual Royal & Noble auction on Wednesday, the SKIMS mogul, who is 42 years old, bought the diamond-covered amethyst Attallah cross pendant that Princess Diana was known to wear.

The Kardashians star put in a bid for the piece, which has square-cut amethysts and 5.25 carats of round-cut diamonds and won it for $197,453 in the last five minutes. Sotheby’s notes this was “double its pre-auction estimate.”

“This is a bold piece of jewellery by its size, colour and style which cannot fail to make a vibrant statement, whether it be of faith or fashion — or indeed both,” Sotheby London’s Head of Jewelry, Kristian Spofforth, shared in a statement. “We are delighted that this piece has found a new lease of life within the hands of another globally famous name.”

Sources tell PEOPLE that Kim is proud to own a beautiful piece of jewellery that the late princess used to wear. Kim will add the beautiful cross pendant to her growing collection of jewellery worn or owned by strong, famous women who have inspired her.

The late Princess of Wales wore the pendant many times, but the most famous time was at the Birthright charity gala in London in 1987, which raised money for the group’s work helping women during pregnancy and childbirth.

She wore the jewelled, flower-shaped pendant on a long pearl chain with a Catherine Walker royal purple velvet Victorian dress. Sotheby’s said in a press release that the ornament has been around for a long time. In the 1920s, court jewellers Garrard made the one-of-a-kind pendant.

Here is some of the content we’ve recently posted:

In the 1980s, the late Naim Attallah CBE, who had been the group chief executive of Asprey & Garrard, bought it. Princess Diana often had the one-of-a-kind gem on loan from him. The press release from Sotheby’s says that the Princess was the only person who ever wore the cross. Since she died, the cross hasn’t been seen in public until now.

The group also says that Princess Diana and the jeweller had a close relationship, so close that Diana chose her engagement ring from the house in 1981.

Kardashian has made news before for wearing things from pop culture again. Last May, she broke the internet when she showed up at the 2022 Met Gala wearing the same crystal-covered Jean Louis dress that Marilyn Monroe wore when she sang to John F. Kennedy on his birthday in 1962.

The famous champagne-coloured silk soufflé dress was borrowed from the Ripley’s Believe It or Not Museum in Orlando, Florida. It had a figure-hugging shape and a scoop neckline.

Kardashian did a lot to look like the Hollywood star. For example, she bleached her hair platinum blonde for “14 hours straight” and ate a no-carb, no-sugar diet.

Although she received backlash for her weight loss and for wearing the iconic, delicate garment in the first place, Kardashian compared the transformation to an actor preparing for an on-screen role, telling the New York Times: “To me it was like, ‘OK, Christian Bale can do it for a movie role and that is acceptable,'” adding, “Even Renée Zellweger gained weight for a role. It’s all the same to me.”
