Duxbury Mother Faces Charges of Killing Three Children With Exercise Band

A Massachusetts district attorney claimed that a mother used exercise bands to strangle and kill her three small children before attempting suicide.

According to our sister station WFXT, Lindsay Clancy, 32, is currently being treated in a Boston hospital but has been charged with murder, assault, and battery with a deadly weapon, strangulation or suffocation, and the deaths of her daughters Cora, 5, Dawson, 3, and Callan, 8 months.

After killing her children on January 24, Clancy, according to Assistant District Attorney Jennifer Sprague, jumped from a second-floor window of the family home.

Due to her injuries, Clancy attended her appointment via video call. Her lawyer claimed that as a result of her jump from the window and several spine fractures, she is now paralyzed.

Clancy took her eldest to a doctor’s visit, according to Sprague, who testified in court that there were no problems with the mother’s conduct or demeanor. Clancy then went back home and played in the snow with Cora and Dawson before heading inside to get a takeaway order, according to WFXT.

Sprague claimed that Clancy calculated the time needed to obtain the food and texted her husband, who was working from home, to get the order. Sprague claimed that Clancy killed the kids in the home’s basement using exercise bands while he was on his way to retrieve the food.

It was too quiet when her husband arrived back with the supper, and he noticed blood on the ground close to an open window. He dialed 911 and while talking to the dispatcher, he discovered his wife had injuries on her neck and wrists. According to WFXT, she admitted to him that she had leaped from the window.

According to Sprague, her husband first inquired “What did you do?” before asking where the kids were. Sprague said in court that Clancy allegedly told her husband they were “in the basement” and that “She knew what she had done.”

Sprague claims that when he discovered the kids still wearing the bands around their necks, Clancy’s husband could be heard on the 911 call “screaming in anguish and shock.”

Before removing the bands and attempting to get the kids to breathe, the husband, according to Sprague, exclaimed, “She killed the babies!” WFXT reported. Callan passed away a few days after Cora and Dawson were declared dead at the hospital.

According to Sprague, Clancy described her actions in the days before the murders and exhibited no symptoms of hallucinations or delusions. Clancy did concede in a letter dated January 23 that she had a “bit of postpartum anxiety” and had previously checked herself into a hospital on January 1.

However, on January 5, she left. She also kept track of the medications she had been taking, noting that three of them were causing her problems at the time of the deaths of her children.

Kevin Reddington, the counsel for Clancy, said that she had taken various drugs prior to the killings, including Prozac, Ativan, Benadryl, Seroquel, Amitriptyline, and Trazodone.

Reddington testified in court that his client’s mental state deteriorated and that the drugs “thoroughly ruined” her. She allegedly told her spouse that she was considering suicide. “This is not a situation that was planned by any means. This is a situation that clearly is a product of mental illness,”

Reddington added that postpartum depression is not treated for women in society throughout the hearing. Reddington reportedly remarked in court, “It’s medicated, medicate, medicate,” according to WFXT.

Until further notice, Clancy was instructed to stay in the hospital under police protection. In May, she will appear in court again.
