Hogwarts Legacy, the recently unveiled Wizarding World role-playing game, was not directly created by Harry Potter author J.K. Rowling, according to a FAQ from publisher Warner Bros. Games.
Although J.K. Rowling was not personally involved in game development, WB notes in the FAQ that the Wizarding World is built on the extraordinary body of work she has produced.
Multiplayer Hogwarts Legacy “is not a new story from J.K. Rowling,” the business adds. Although the answer to whether Rowling has contributed to the project in any way is not totally obvious, it seems that at most, her involvement is minimal.
This announcement should relieve players who have been waiting years for the chance to play an open-world role-playing game set in the Harry Potter universe.
The parent company of Hogwarts Legacy creator Avalanche Software and Harry Potter video game publisher Portkey Games, Warner Bros. Interactive Entertainment, that it had no additional information to share beyond the game’s press release, FAQ, and a statement issued by Warner Bros. in June.
Many detractors have dubbed her a TERF, which stands for “trans-exclusionary radical feminist” as a result of her remarks and her reiterating them over the summer, including in a lengthy essay later that month in which she sought to defend her positions.
Troubled Blood, a new novel by Rowling that was released this week, has some critics worried that it would uphold the author’s anti-transgender views.
If people really want to not support @jk_rowling that's fine but #hogwartslegacygame isn't hers. It is based on the books and characters' names but it isn't HARRY POTTER. Now get over yourselves, it is a game. Do you want to fight for us? Fight the anti-trans bills, not a game. pic.twitter.com/aUD048EmI7

The protagonist of the tale is a cisgender guy who kills people by disguising himself as a woman. Some devoted followers have begun purging their homes of their prized Harry Potter possessions because they are unable to distinguish between creator and creation. This boycott of Rowling’s works may include Hogwarts Legacy for disgruntled fans.
In June, Warner Bros. issued a statement after Rowling’s initial comments, although the statement did not directly name her:
The events in the last several weeks have firmed our resolve as a company to confront difficult societal issues. Warner Bros.’ position on inclusiveness is well established, and fostering a diverse and inclusive culture has never been more important to our company and to our audiences around the world. We deeply value the work of our storytellers who give so much of themselves in sharing their creations with us all. We recognize our responsibility to foster empathy and advocate understanding of all communities and all people, particularly those we work with and those we reach through our content.
Rowling was not engaged in the game’s development, according to the Hogwarts Legacy FAQ, but she will undoubtedly receive royalties because she still makes money from the entire Wizarding World milieu.
And it’s telling that the developers of Hogwarts Legacy felt the need to clarify Rowling’s involvement in the game via a FAQ that was released following the game’s announcement.
An open-world role-playing game called Hogwarts Legacy is set in the Harry Potter universe in the late 1800s, a few decades before the Fantastic Beasts movies and a century before the main character of the series was born.
Behind the walls of the eponymous wizarding school, players will encounter a unique scenario. The release of Hogwarts Legacy is planned for 2021 for Xbox One, Windows PC, PlayStation 4, and Xbox Series X.
