Rapper AKA from South Africa, real name Kiernan Forbes, died on Friday night after being shot outside a Durban restaurant. He was 35 years old at the time.
Tony and Lynn Forbes, AKA’s parents, informed Rolling Stone on Saturday that their son had passed away.
“It is with extreme sadness that we acknowledge the passing of our beloved son, and confirm his untimely and tragic passing on the evening of February 10, 2023. We are awaiting further details from Durban police,” the parents said. ‘
“To us, Kiernan Jarryd Forbes was a son, brother, grandson, nephew, cousin, and friend, most importantly father to his beloved daughter Kairo,” the statement said. “To many, he was AKA, Supa Mega, Bhova, and the many other names of affection his legion of fans called him by. Our son was loved and gave love in return.”

The South African police told regional news organizations, according to the New York Times, that AKA was accosted by two armed males as she was leaving a well-known nightclub on Friday at 10 p.m. Before leaving the area, the two attackers shot Forbes multiple times.
According to a source close to AKA, Tebello Motsoane, a 34-year-old cook and the rapper’s close friend, was also fatally shot during the incident.
The two suspects have not yet been located by law enforcement. The little daughter he had with D.J. Zinhle, a South African hip-hop legend, is his only surviving child.
