Barbara Bosson, an Emmy-nominated actress best known for playing Fay Furillo on the NBC drama “Hill Street Blues,” has passed away, according to her son. She was 83.
Bosson “passed away peacefully on February 18, 2023, surrounded by her family and loved ones,” according to a statement from her son, Jesse Bochco. No specific cause of death was revealed.
Bosson made her feature film début in 1968’s “Bullitt,” starring Steve McQueen, in which she played an uncredited nurse. Steven Bochco, a television writer and producer who later collaborated on the creation of “Hill Street Blues,” wed Bosson in 1970.
After making a few cameos on television programs throughout the 1970s, Bosson secured a lead part in the brief TV series “Richie Brockelman, Private Eye,” which was also co-created by Bochco, in 1978. However, the show only lasted for six episodes.
From 1981 through 1985, Bosson went on to feature in 100 episodes of the popular police drama “Hill Street Blues.” For her performance as Furillo, the ex-wife of police captain Frank Furillo, she received five consecutive Emmy nominations.

After disagreements regarding her contract and the development of her character, Bosson quit the show during its sixth season, one year after Bochco left the show.
According to The Associated Press at the time, Bosson stated at the time, “I have decided to quit because of flaws in the commercial arrangement.” “It’s not a matter of money. I found out they lied when they informed my agent of certain things.”
Bosson added, “I’m very sad about what they’re doing with Fay,” according to AP. “The new producers don’t like the character. Before, my husband always wrote her scenes. I stayed on after he left because I wanted my career to be separate from his. People have always made snide remarks that I was on the show because of Steven.”
Bosson continued to star in a variety of TV shows during the 1980s and 1990s, including “Cop Rock,” “Hooperman,” “L.A. Law,” and “Murder One,” for which she received a second Emmy nomination.
Jesse Bochco, who also works as a television writer and director, is one of the couple’s two children. In 1997, the couple got a divorce.
Barbara Bosson is warmly remembered by her son, daughter, granddaughter, and grandchild, according to a statement from Jesse Bocho.
Barbara Bosson will be remembered for her incredible talent and her contribution to the entertainment industry. Her legacy will live on forever.
