For the billionaire who has everything, what do you buy? possibly his hometown. The Wall Street Journal reported on Thursday that entities associated with Elon Musk and his businesses have apparently been buying thousands of acres of land in Texas in an effort to establish a town where his employees might live and work.
According to the Journal, these organizations have acquired at least 3,500 acres close to Austin and are attempting to incorporate a town called Snailbrook, which is likely a nod to Musk’s tunneling company’s mascot, the Boring Company.
County deeds and other land records are cited in the report, along with emails from the city and county, firm internal correspondence, state licensing data, and interviews with landowners and municipal and county officials. In order to attract employees and occasionally encourage them to work longer hours, IT businesses have provided a variety of amenities on campus over the years.

Musk may expand on that strategy by creating his own business town. The story claims that Musk wants his staff at the primary manufacturing sites for his firms Tesla, Boring Co., and SpaceX, all of which are located close to Austin, “to be able to reside in new homes with below-market rentals.”
More than 100 homes will purportedly be built as part of the Snailbrook project, along with neighborhood amenities including a pool and a sports field. Musk, who has a history of running afoul of state and federal officials, may have more influence over how things are governed if a town is incorporated.

Tesla’s corporate headquarters and Musk’s personal house would be moving from California to Texas in 2020, according to Musk, who cited displeasure with California’s coronavirus-related limitations. Tesla inaugurated a brand-new Gigafactory manufacturing facility in Austin last year.
Both Boring Co. and Musk’s SpaceX have facilities in Texas, and the Austin American Statesman reported in February that Boring Co. has been in discussions with Austin about the idea of creating tunnels in the city. According to documents examined by CNN, the Boring Co. owns 11 parcels of land on one address close to the Colorado River where mobile homes have been constructed during the previous three years, according to property records for Bastrop County, which is adjacent to Austin.

According to a notice of the meeting, the Texas Commission on Environmental Quality will hold a hearing on plans for a wastewater treatment facility on the same property that was submitted by an LLC registered to a Boring Co. executive.
Public records reveal that the same organization also owns a number of surrounding land parcels that include pasture and farming land, as well as building lots for both commercial and residential buildings. According to The Journal, Musk’s team has talked about creating a municipality in Bastrop County.
The county informed the Journal that it had not received a request for incorporation from Musk or any of his firms, which calls for a specific number of citizens. A request for an instant response was not met by Tesla, SpaceX, or Boring Co.
