Musk is said to have purchased thousands of acres of property about 35 miles outside of Austin to construct his town there for staff to live and work.
Musk has reportedly referred to the city as a “kind of Texas nirvana along the Colorado River” in an interview with the Wall Street Journal.
Musk would have some say over municipal policy if he built a town. At last year’s annual all-hands meeting, Boring’s president Steve Davis proposed hosting a mayoral election.
Some modular homes and signs on poles have been spotted in the proposed municipality, which is rumored to be next to the under-construction Boring and SpaceX facilities. “Welcome to Snailbrook, Texas, established in 2021”
The official emblem of the Boring community is the Snailbrook. To attract and retain employees, Musk is reportedly considering renting out homes to them at significantly reduced rates than the going rate in the area.
According to an advertisement, a two- or three-bedroom house in the area would cost $800 per month, compared to $2,200 in neighboring Bastrop, Texas. The local government is also considering opening a Montessori school.
To incorporate under Texas law, a community must have a population of at least 201 people. The Journal’s coverage of the topic reveals plans to build an additional 110 residences in the Snailbrook neighborhood.

Entities connected to Musk have purchased at least 3,500 acres in the greater Austin area over the past three years. According to the Journal, Musk may control as many as 6,000 acres.
Two years ago, Musk moved to Texas after declaring California the “land of overregulation, overlitigation, over taxation.” Just last month, though, Tesla revealed that it would be relocating its engineering headquarters to California as part of a broader effort to increase its presence in the state.
If Musk does construct his city in Texas, he won’t be the only multibillionaire to do it. Mark Cuban, the owner of the Dallas Mavericks, bought the entire town of Mustang, Texas, in 2021 for a sum not made public.
Since 2017, the city has been up for sale, with an initial price tag of $4 million. Despite the price cut to $2 million, it was still unable to sell. Mustang, Navarro County, Texas, is roughly an hour south of Dallas, off Interstate 45. Yet, at only 77 acres, it’s far from what Musk purportedly wants.
