The fabled Viking had poliomyelitis as a child, and a doctor advised him to get involved in sports to build up his weak leg muscles. He attended the University of Minnesota and excelled in football, basketball, and baseball.
He spent two years as an Eagles player before switching to the CFL to play for the Winnipeg Blue Bombers in 1953. Four years later, he was hired as the team’s head coach. Like the Vikings in the NFL, the Bombers were the only CFL team he ever managed.
Grant had a terrific coaching career, finishing with a 168-108-5 record in the NFL and a 118-64-3 record in the CFL. In 1969, the penultimate season before the AFL-NFL merger, he won the NFL despite not having won a Super Bowl as a head coach. In Super Bowl IV that year, the Vikings fell to the AFL’s Kansas City Chiefs.
As he was designated as a team consultant after his retirement, he continued to have his own office at the Vikings’ facility until his passing. In March 2009, Pat Grant, his wife of 81 years, passed away from Parkinson’s disease.
